Gregg Allman, the soulful singer-songwriter and rock n' blues pioneer who founded The Allman Brothers Band with his late brother, Duane, and composed such classics as "Midnight Rider," "Melissa" and the epic concert jam "Whipping Post," has died at age 69, Billboard has learned. He was diagnosed with hepatitis C in 1999 and underwent a liver transplant in 2010.
With his long blond hair, cool facade and songs that chronicled restless, wounded lives, Allman came to personify the sexy, hard-living rock outlaw in a life marked by musical triumph and calamitous loss.

Two of the most innovative bands... Allman Brothers and The Band... defined a musical style that forms the roots of so much of today's music... will be missed. Hard to classify... rock, blues, country, even jazz at times... still powerful today. |

I just learned for Gregg Allman. Midnight Rider is one of my all-time favorite road song.
And the road goes on forever.... |

Another important name in surfing has died. Jack O’Neill, inventor of the modern-day wetsuit, died today at age 94.

Jim Piersall became one of my favorite players when my father gave me a new glove for my 11th birthday in October 1961. Piersall had one of his best seasons that year when he hit .322 to finish 3rd in batting average in the AL. He also won a Gold Glove for being one of the three best defensive outfielders as voted by the league's managers and coaches.
He was a zany character. When he hit his 100th home run while playing for the Mets in 1963, he ran the bases backward.
Caption is, "Piersall runs the bases backwards to celebrate his 100th career home run" |
