AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- Ron Meyer, the football coach behind SMU's powerhouse ''Pony Express'' teams who later called for a snowplow to clear a spot so the New England Patriots could kick the winning field goal against Miami in one of the NFL's most memorable moments, has died. He was 76. _________________ What are the last 2 words of the National Anthem?

Absolutely! They both hold up as great documentaries but are also amazing time capsules of the era, even if you're not a big fan of the subjects.
His Endless Summer II set a new standard for high quality surf docs. Although it followed the same basic formula as the first, down to the sometimes-corny narration, the photography and editing were a huge leap forward and it paved the way for a new generation of surf and skate movies.
I remember seeing it in the theatre and being totally blown away. I love surfing movies even though I never even tried surfing until my Baja trip this year.
Speaking of Baja, Bruce's son Dana directed the impressive Dust to Glory, about the Baja 1000. It was one of the early movies to use small camcorders side-by-side with film cameras for amazing POV footage. Lots of VWs in there too! _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

Love those movies. They were like movies about everything I wanted to do growing up. Bruce Brown made a bunch of surfing films filmed around Southern California and Hawaii before Endless Summer. San Francisco Mayor Edwin Lee, a former civil rights attorney who became the first Asian-American to serve in the city's top post, died early Tuesday -- hours after appearing at a public event -- at a city hospital at age 65, his office said. _________________ What are the last 2 words of the National Anthem?

Tracy Stallard, who became a footnote in baseball history for throwing the pitch that the Yankees’ Roger Maris hit for his 61st home run on the last day of the 1961 season — breaking one of the game’s most cherished records, Babe Ruth’s 60-homer season for the 1927 Yankees — died on Wednesday in Kingsport, Tenn. He was 80. _________________ What are the last 2 words of the National Anthem?

Wow, those take me back. LOVED both ES and ES-II (the second II), and later got videos of all his early stuff. There is also a great interview from his home where he talked about the filming, and the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium shows he put on.
My kids insisted that I show both movies the day things warmed up enough to be comfortable in shorts and flip flops.
Great soundtracks.... the Sandals re-recorded the original songs and it's still killer.

I recall hearing a Radio interview show back in the 80's when one of their albums had been recently released. The interviewer asked about the album name, and the guy said they used the name "Blow Up" so that if the album ever made the Billboard charts it would read "The Smithereens Blow Up". I always thought that was clever. _________________ nothing |
