Restoring a 57 Vert. Installed new Spacers and installed my back plates.
I have a question..... What is the correct way to wire together the bolts with the holes in them?

If I was Ewan McGregor I pushed it down the road.

I can't say it was just today Wink , but I made some progress on a seat rebuild I've been doing over the winter:

It's my passenger seat, which I've always just kept under an aftermarket seat cover. However the old guide wires were sticking out of it, which wasn't a whole lot of fun for my passengers. So, despite having never done anything even remotely upholstery-related, I decided to tear into it and see what I could come up with.

I painted the outer frames in Rustoleum almond, which seemed to match up pretty well, then took the seat cover apart. While the top was hard and cracking, I wanted to save as much as possible since the rest of the interior is OG. So I grabbed some vinyl with a similar pattern, and managed to use the original top piece as a template.

Measuring and hand-sewing around the wires was probably the most difficult part, especially since the measurements from side to side showed that these aren't actually straight lines - they're just angled enough inwards to provide the contour when it's all together, so it ended up being quite a bit of trial and error.

Once I was happy with the measurements and seams, I got some leather dye from Michael's to try my hand at colour-matching, and while it's lighter in tone than the original I was going for, I used a colour-matching guide from a vinyl repair kit to add a little bit of blue for a darker shade. This is all going to be sealed afterwards so it doesn't rub off, and of course I'm going to try to match it as closely as possible to the rest of the interior.

Sorry I don't have better pictures, but I did use the OG horsehair pad. It was actually in great shape, and even has the original paper tag on the inside!

It's amazing how much better off the bottom half of the seat vinyl was, and since this is a preservation I decided to sew the two together. I don't own/know how to use a sewing machine btw, so this was all by hand... Confused (I may invest in one now though - if nothing else it'll give my fingers a break!)

I'll be honest, it took 2 attempts to sew it together Embarassed . The first time, I started from the back corner and ended up 0.75" short on the other side... I learned that one the hard way, so for my second attempt I started with the front seam and worked my way backwards on either side. 2nd time's a charm!

And there we go! There are still adjustments to be made since the 0.5" jute padding I got at Lowe's will have to set, and I still have some minor sewing to take care of around the back and corners, but I'd still call it a successful first attempt at upholstery. Now onto the top backrest!

Today I got my '57 Bug out of storage. It spent the last 5 months in my parents garage up here while they spent the winter in Arizona. Today I've been driving the car around, and plan to make it my daily driver for the next 6 months... or more. Very Happy

To prepare the car for storage I made the last 3 fill-ups using gas without alcohol in it. And then in my parents garage I disconnected the battery ground cable. Today I reconnected the cable and without even charging it the stock size battery easily cranked the car over for the 20 seconds or so required for the first start. There was only a single drip of oil on the floor of my parents garage, about the drain plate area, after 5 months. Shocked

Can anyone tell me the correct outer major diameter of a stock late 1956 Type 1 oval air cleaner? I found I have two different sizes that fit the stock carb.

Many thanks
