the main seal that came out of this 1977 GD motor is a genuine VW/Audi 029-105-245. The replacement I have is 029-105-245B. I have seen some threads here about variants on the rear main seals. Are these the same or is something else going on? _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

so there is a 245, a 245B and a 245C.
The one that came out of this GD motor is a 245. It appears to be the same dimensions as the B version except the center is larger but that is to be expected as it has been riding on a flywheel. The one I bought for this 1977 / 78 GD motor is a VR orange 245B . The question is will that work? Maybe Ray will chime in as he wrote the STF thread. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

wanted to add to this. A friend sent me a factory seal some time ago. I didn't use it on my recent engine because it was made in W. Germany many years ago. Upon inspecting it today, the center is silicone rubber and the outside regular rubber. This is how VW got the benefit of better sealing with no hardening on the seal, and the outside being capable of not sliding when a sealer was applied. Nice. Will try it next time I need a T4 main seal. _________________ “Most people don’t know what they’re doing, and a lot of them are really good at it.” - George Carlin |

The 100% factory T-127 1800 industrial engine I have has a seal with rubber on the perimeter it popped out very easily when I wanted to check the condition of the shims. It appears to be a part silicone and part rubber seal. |
