That sounds like Blue Nelson. He rode with me during the Shasta Snow Trip last year as he needed a ride. I'd never met or heard of him before. He started nonchalantly telling me about his car collection and I thought he was b.sing me. I later found out it was all true. He did mention having "a couple heb's". |

I can't remember the fellow's name I am referring to in Malibu... but it isn't Ed. He is a guy who is big in the car world... and works in Hollywood I think... not sure. Interesting fellow... big porsche enthusiast.... super modern house. He has an interesting sounding name... I just can't remember it. |

yes... Bata is the fellow I was thinking of. I saw him Tuesday at the Carmel Concours on the Ave... during the Monterey Pebble Beach car week. His heb was next to Dick Christensen's beautiful 43 KDF car.
here are a couple of cell phone shots of the Heb. Ostrich interior!

No heb nr in the front. Replaced front early in its life...
The car seams to be a late model according to some details.

They've made Cowboy boots from them since 1970 and farmed them
since 1838 according to info on line.

Anyone have any magazine coverage of that Bug-In? Was it in the show
or just there? Are there any other pics? Top down or interior shots?
With the ATJ on the plate in front of the 388, it just looks like a regular
number and not the Heb number.
If the owners initials were ATJ then it could possibly be Heb 388.
Can you see the door hinges clearly on the original photo? Does it have hinge covers on them or just regular hinges?

Lot's of things to point out in that picture, but in particular, that's no early windshield. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

I was thinking 58 and later, but on second look, maybe you're right. I don't see the bumps for the wipers. It still looks a little on the large side for a 57 or earlier windscreen, but it's probably just me. _________________ EMPI Power Rules! |

It looks correct for me, the windshield, even without the trim in it. 100%correct. Most of the parts for a split are there. Lights and bumber is wrong but for the rest it looks like an original heb to me.
Anyone know wich car this is? _________________ Zelensis, glassfibre body made in Belgium , disigned and built on a VW platform About 25 body's built.

Is that ONLY a 1963 California plate and no other possible year of plate?
How can you tell? By the sticker colors or ?

ill clear this up.
they used the black plates from 1963-1969.
they were randomly issued numbers so the letters and numbers have nothing to do with the owners initials or the number of the car.
the letters/numbers started with AAA 000 and were randomly issued in sequential order until they got to ZZZ 999. after that they switched to blue and yellow plates that started with 000 AAA
the plate in the picture was issued in 1963 and the picture was taken in 1970 (the red sticker on the left side) the sticker on the right is 1969. _________________ Jesus Saves

Thanks, I deleted my question while you were answering after I
found some of that info online.
After I found the info, I was wondering why the car had those plates and
not blue ones if the picture was taken in 1975 at Bug In 13.
Maybe the first pic was taken in 1970 and the magazine pic later?
With the 75 pic in B/W I can't tell if it has a red sticker or not.
Would they have forced a plate change in 1970 or just kept adding stickers?

For the record........
I took the pictures of the Hebmuller at the Bug-In no earlier than 73 or 74 .
The red sticker on the CA plate is 1973, white sticker under the red sticker is probably 1972, orange sticker under the 1975 sticker is 1974?

Hey Mozart.... thanks for all the old coachbuilt photos from the 70's. You were pioneering! Back then all I can remember was Mary Beth and Phil, Hollywood Ralph, Albert Beihl, Steve Herron, and Joe Crocket cruising the coachbuilts...
Maybe Blue and his mom... I can't remember exactly when Blue showed up...
anyway your shots are cool to see.
I remember in 1980... I was going shopping on Melrose ave in Los Angeles (art student... looking for cool clothes and new music (yes records... stop laughing))... and there was no where to park... so I went down a side street and parked in a residential area just north of Melrose... half a block off. I locked my microbus and saw a car under a tarp in the driveway of the house I was in front of. It was a Lawrence Rometsch! I peeked over the fence and there were two Beeskows... one black and one turquoise... and some other coachbuilt I didn't recognize... maybe a denzel or a D and S... can't say cause I didn't know what they were then and it was buried in trash and parts and under a cover. I didn't have a camera!... bummer.
I had accidentally discovered Hollywood Ralph!
Who else was cruising coachbuilts in the 70's?
any interesting photos worth posting?
BTW... Mozart it was nice to meet you at Solvang. Wished we could have chatted a bit more... |
