I just bought a 73 Thing it needs a trans and engine I have the engine I am looking at a trans and the guy thinks it ma have come out of a Thing the part # is 113 301 103k AT 30 104 from what I understand the nose on the Thing and Bug are diferent and not interchangable.
How can you tell the diference and where can I buy a Thing trans nose?

An AT transmission code means that is from a Super or Cab 8/72 or later, not an AV code Thing transmission. Gear ratios should be the same, except for a 3.875 final drive rather than 4.125 (more torque for a Thing).

As for the nose cone, I can't really help much there. I haven't stumbled across any for sale, but haven't looked for them, so..

Nose cones are commonly available in the classifieds. Someone more knowledgeable should chime in, but I believe that the nose cones that Things use are the same as 73 and later beetles.

Things use the nose cone AND mounts from the 1972 and earlier Beetle. One would think they used the 73 up as the years match, but they don't. The late Beetle mounts are VERY soft. So any way, a quick search through the gallery and I found....
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

.... A pic of an early (pre 73) nose cone, note the TWO mount holes on the left, the nose cone is being held sideways, the mount holes are bellow the shift rod.
I could not quickly find a late nose cone, but is has THREE mount holes in a triangle configuration.
The nose cones are interchangeable AND are available NEW. If you'd like PM me for details.

I just swapped out the transmission in my 74 Thing with a rebuilt one that was in a 72 Beetle. I had to transfer the drive flanges from the Thing to the Beetle transmission. Everything else just bolted right up. I didn't even have to adjust the shifter!
