Wow, looks great! Looks to have been well taken care of. Is it the original JX TD then?

As to the speedo, I have seen threads on speedo tweaking but that’s about the extent of my expertise. Read this one not too long ago -

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=700820&highlight=speedometer

- more for a consistent over/under reading issue but has some good pics of the inner workings.

Very nice doka though. Looks really 'clean' and rust free. Welcome to the club.

Nice. Is that the original euro ball (50 mm?) or a U.S. one?

Hey guys!

I’m not really new to vanagons as i have an 85 westy but it’s a mere 2WD so i thought i’d go syncro doka, and why not a factory 16’. It ‘s a decent example, it has a couple of bruises but it’s solid and it doesn’t look bad.

It had very very old studded Nokia tyres. Swapped these for general grabbers in 205R16 and rebuilt the front brakes to make it a driver (new calipers, pads and discs..)

Recently i had the opportunity to get this other Swedish doka, 2WD but with a funky factory interior and a clean vindic cell.

Here are both of them side by side

Kind of felt guilty about robbing the 2WD from its parts but i’m pretty sure my syncro had a vindic cell from factory (tabs on the gates for the latches...) and so now it looks like a spaceship and is a good camper/bar/works horse...

I do love the look of the doka without the cell better but it’s just so much added practicality. We’ll see if it’s a keeper or not. The roof rack i’m Pretty sure i’m Gonna take off.

Plans are to keep driving it as a daily driver and iron all the kinks. Then maybe a resto but knowing myself i doubt ill ever get to that Very Happy good inspiration on this thread for clean rigs though, thanks guys!

That's a great pair, Roland. My great-grandfather always said you never can have too many dokas … or maybe that was someone on the Samba Wink

Greetings Doka Brethren,
i am in need of replacing the engine cover on my recently acquired Doka.

What's there now is a ratty plywood cover held in place w/four bolts. Could re-fab that easily enough, but I'd like to know, was that stock?

On my old '83 Vanagon, the engine lid was hard plastic with sound deadener IIRC and a couple of quarter turn clips to lock it in place. Something along those lines (sans clips I'd guess) would be sweet.

What does yours have?
Thanks much!

The wood cover is what they came with along with shouldered bolts.

The stock lid was laminated wood with four bolt holes. The wood is hard as steel but unfortunately in instances where the engine got hot enough it warped leading people to seek other solutions.

On my sinka I have an aluminum diamond-plate lid -- works very well but note it can heat up. My doka has an old wooden highway sign (they were made extremely tough) still using the four bolt holes.

I have seen lids on a piano hinge and mini-shocks to raise and lower. I often thought of getting a loose bus lid and cutting it to shape and fit the trucks (note early bus lids were metal and later ones, plastic IIRC -- both tough).

After nearly 2 years since dismantling everything, my Canadian model 1986 Syncro Doka, is finally back on its wheels (it already has accumulated a nice layer of dust on it since painting it back in November). Now I've got room in the garage to finish prepping the doors to get those painted.
