i think the are a swedish option, they are heavy and rubbery!! they have the word ABKATI in the middle between the 2 bolt holes.
they certainly stop the gates slamming on the vehicle! |
I don't think those are factory option, Abkati is a swedish car accessory dealer (see www.abkati.se, or page C7 in this pdf).
Btw, I looked up the license number of your car and the last swedish owner is not far (about 30km) from my place. Small world huh |

small world in deed, hope you manage to travel as much as this syncro has! the rubber blocks certainly do the job, saving the plastic arches!! |

Found some Jagdwagen love at Syncro de Mayo 09...

I was running a stock 2.1 with a cat, but I did have front and rear lockers and a solid shaft. _________________ Vanagon/Transporter flares here: www.terrawagen.com

Awesome thread! I am restoring my 1989 Syncro Tristar after having it up for sale about two years ago and it not selling due to being "rusty."
Here are some limited shots of the exterior after paintwork:
In primer after the rust was replaced with good metal in front of the rear wheels, around the fenders themselves, above the rear vents, etc.
Freshly painted rear deck:
Fresh from paint (the peel is from my camera, not the paintwork)
Then we tackled the weathered work truck interior with something a little different. I "came upon" six yards of MkV GTi Interlagos Plaid fabric and mixed in a custom headliner and custom carpeting.
Door panels before heat stretching:
Rear seat:
I also just this weekend got the Carat bumpers back from the body shop along with the gates. My goal is to have this thing back together from a body and paint perspective in the next week and see what happens. I have a fresh 12v VR6 conversion with full OBDII wiring ready to go in but I am not sure if I should just list it for sale again or go through with my plans.
Lots of nice trucks on here to be sure. _________________ -1989 Syncro Tristar TDi on Air Ride

I don't have a lot of good pics of my truck but this was from a Syncro Safari trip down around Bend Oregon. Original Escorial Green Paint, Overland 2.6 liter inline 5 cylinder motor, John Wessels lift kit and 215/85/16 tires. I had the front wheel arch off in the first pic since this was before the lift and things were rubbing. Now that I look at the pics I have, all of these are before the lift.
I haven't posted pics in a long time so let's see if this works:

Damn! Both "new additions"/updates make me jealous... The endo of '09 wasn't very good to my TriStar TDI. A couple of bumps/bruises, and an underlying electrical issue waylaid it. Hollidays/work/lack of funds have prolonged the repair plans, and I'm starting to miss driving the bugger...
At least this thread is keeping me inspired to hold onto it and eventually bring it back to its former glory... _________________ '89 Transporter DoKa TriStar SYNCRO TDi |

It really looks like that sick 2.1 was holding you back on truck hill ; )
Have you started on the TDI? I want to come in and check it out. I am still 90% sure I am going that route as well.
Sycrozilla I am guessing this is Seth? I love the orange rig as well. That is loaded with Burly's parts isn't it? We really need a thread on that rig. Love the color.

I agree, its a sexy van.
and I also agree that a syncro tdi is the best combination. with a 5speed. _________________

I'm excited to see you get it all sorted out, Eric, so I can learn from the master...I'm sure that I'll eventually go TDI too. _________________ 1990 2wd TriStar, Oettinger-tuned 1.6L TD |

I will try and take some pics with the lift and post them up. It looks cool but took a while to dial in the right spring combo. John likes really really soft suspensions, which work well off road but not for a fully loaded truck. I think if I had it to do over again I would look very closely at one of the Burley Motorsports kits. I also would make sure you really need a lift...this does digress some from the Syncro DoKa thread though.
