I'm sure that I'm far from alone, but the shift boot on my Automatic Shift Cable has seen better days.

Part # 211713269B

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I looked up the part number and did a search but as with many items I came up empty.

Now, this isn't a huge deal to have a good boot here. It works just fine with the crappy boot it has.
I do worry about dirt working in or worse water that freezes and locks the car in gear.

I measured the boot today.
The narrow end is 6mm (.240")
The wide end is 15mm (.588")
The length is about 2" though it my opinion it really doesn't matter too much.

I'm just wondering if anyone has seen boots similar to this on newer cars or maybe in Marine or Aviation applications?
There are a lot of us who see a lot of things.....

Just tossing it out there....... keep your eyes open if you would.

Thanks!
Dave

Wonder if you could use something like this or something from the motorcycle parts bins.

Good eye!

I ordered one, it is worth the try, I'll report back if it works.

I've seen a boot for Bicycle brake cables but they look far too short.

That was the first thought I had too and I probably even have one or two in my pile of obsolete bicycle parts. But, in addition to being too short, I suspect the hole is too small since a bike brake cable is only about 1 mm in diameter.

Do let us know how the moto part you ordered works out. My cable boot is essentially a pile of rubber o-rings at this point.

The 78 through 81 911 SC used a similar boot on the clutch cable if this doesn’t pan out.

McMaster-Carr sells a promising looking bellows that could work.
It is made of Neoprene Rubber.......
but at $33 for one ....... I am hesitant to try it......

Looks great but I've no idea if it would work.

What sizes are the clutch cable and bowden tube on a Porsche?

The boot ends are pretty small. I had to use silicone paste to get them over the Porsche cable and conduit. If they ended up being loose, a couple small tie taps could take up the difference. Just looked very similar and it’s German.

If you have a pick your own wrecking yard close by, you can just cruise the rows looking for boots off of newer vehicles.

I haven't wandered junk yards since the 1980's.

This is kind of what I was hoping this thread would do virtually.
And it looks like it is working.

looks like it will have the range of motion we need on the automatic cable.

thankfully, mine was in nice shape but I was eyeballing this one just in case. I'd be willing to bet it's going to be dam close

Well…..
Lucky me……
There is a corner of my shop that I haven’t touched for awhile.
It has pipes, long clamps, roof rack bars, roof drip edge and god only knows what else packed into that niche.

I was actually looking for a license plate and thought it may have been slipped down behind everything.
What should fall out almost hitting me in the head.
An automatic shift cable!
And on the end of that cable?
A 1986 shift boot that hasn’t seen weather or use since about 1990!

A tad stiff but I’ll treat it with something, a rubber lube? Silicone?

I hadn’t measured the length yet ……. Just the bellows, not the boots ….
3” roughly

Well…. That motorcycle boot arrived today……. If I HAD to ...... I could make it work using electrical tape to hold it against the metal sleeve…… the hole size is right for the cable itself.

But overall?
No…… too short and too small in diameter.

I was just teading an old Motir Trend post dealing with old rubber and how to preserve, even reverse the decay.

It mentions a German product Gummi Pfledge Stift
It is said that it contains unicorn extract.......

What the heck?
For $12 its worth a try.
More chemicals for my daughter to figure out what to do with after I die........

https://www.amazon.com/nextzett-91480615-Gummi-Pflege-Rubber/dp/B004B8GTQG?th=1

Aerospace Protectant 303 is also spoken highly off.
My aging brain cells seem to recall that I have a bottle of this stuff.
I recall using it on something when I had my 86 "weekender" but I cannot remember what.
And where it is now? 🤷‍♂️ Moving sucks big time!

No, I've still got it on order after all the whole idea of this thread is to find an alternative to an NLA part.
