OK, my wife was driving home and engine sputtered and died... she pulled over and called me...
Got it home, and just needing to see if I am going in the right direction

Here is what's going on...

Link

Here is what I have done so far...

Checked Gas... Guage Shows just over 1/2 tank... added some more to be sure...

Checked fuel filter no debris in it...

    Checked Battery w/ Multimeter ... reads 13.5

Made sure all connections from Coil are snug and connected

Checked Coil terminal w/ multimeter where red wire goes to auto choke...
    Reads 12.8

Green wire from coil to Distributor - no reading... Is this right?

Checked plug wires to see if there is spark... YES, I got spark.

Checked the Fuel Pump

* No fuel from Pump to Carb ( bowl was empty too )

took, carb off... and cleaned all jets / needles

EDITED TO ADD:

** mnussbau's eye caught that the pin at the base of the pump has backed itself out. ( thanks again )

Peened it back in.

finished cleaning everything, new gaskets for Carb...

installed and sprayed a little starter fluid in the carb,
she fired over and died...
sprayed a little more and she fired and ran....
adjusted the volume control and the idle richness screws...

Hope this helps others in the future if you have problems.

Smile

Best $1.99 meter around! I got a few of them.. keep one in each car.

As for your problem, since you have spark, it's most likely a fuel related problem. See if a squirt of starter fluid in the carb gets it to kick over.

Cheers,
Brad

Alright, after trying to find a Dwell meter around here with no luck at the FLAPS...

I went out and sprayed some starter fluid in the carb.

it fired over for a few secs then sputtered out...

pulled the hose from the fuel pump to the carb and used the 21mm wrench to turn the gen. and nothing happened.

so that is where I am at...

fuel pump may have bunked out...have someone crank her over while your holding the line into a container...if you get fuel to that point....check the needle/seat valve...may be stuck shut....next... carb jet/jets may be clogged and just need a good cleaning
check your oil..is the level high..smell like fuel ?
the fuel pump diaphragm may have gave...thats a common issue with the mech. fuel pump

Did you pull the top off the carb to see if there was any fuel in the bowl?

Don't mean to steal your topic - but if your fuel pump is bad, do you always have gas in your oil or can you have a bad fuel pump and no gas in your oil?

No fuel when trying to crank it over.

Oil level is between the marks on the stick... no smell of fuel.

Yes, no fuel in the bowl.

Update:

So I have the Fuel Pump off, as well as the Carb.
Is a rebuild difficult?

What do you use to clean it up? I SEARCHED but didn't see anything on specific clean up procedures...

Am I right to think its the Fuel Pump needs a rebuild?

Hard to tell but it looks like the pin at the base of the pump has backed itself out. If so it won't pump anything. Take a closer look. The rebuild kit you linked to includes a new pin and c-clips.

didnt see that until you mention it and that looks to be the exact problem. look around on the top of the case for the pin that goes to to pump.

I've never rebuilt a fuel pump but have rebuilt several carbs. It's very easy and straight forward. The rebuild kit should come with an instruction sheet. Just be sure to have access to compressed air so you can blow the passages and jets out well.

When you do rebuild the pump there is a special way to do it. The lever that the pump rod engages (that pivits on your missing pin) has to be depressed before bolting the diaframe together. This sets a certain amount of load on the pump. I'm not sure of amount check a Bentle manual.

It would be easier to just loosen the bowl plug on the left side of the float bowl.
Before you replace the fuel pump, make sure you don't have a bad hose between the pump and the tank, sucking air instead of gas.
Run a hose from the pump inlet and stick into a can of gas, then see if it pumps. If it does, look for a bad fuel line to the tank, or to the pump inlet.

I took the Fuel pump of and snapped a couple closer pics, are you refering to the hole in the middle area?
