This is how the engine was when I got my '68 Bug a few weeks ago. Does everyone prefer those clear fuel filters vs the opaque one I have? Yes I know I need to add some hose clamps. And I know everyone says to move the fuel filter out of the engine bay, but is mine OK since it's not over top the distributor?

If you asked the engineers at VW. They would say no fuel filter in engine compartment. So it’s your comfort level. Why would you want that filter there when you fiddle around with other things? Clear filters allow you to see crap in it. Also, can you see the road in any gaps around the engine tin? If so that will need to be addressed. You don’t want hot air coming up into your engine compartment. Get some rubber seals on those fresh air hoses where they meet the tin. See pictures in this thread.

To quote Bill
“Your carb manifold rubber boot clamps are upside down. The screw/tightening portion of the clamp should be at the bottom so they don't cut your plug wires.“

Three basic combinations have been in my car in the last 12 months.

Went from a stock 1600 single port... to a wild 2332... back to a stock 1641.

I liked the ridiculous power of the 2332... but not the headaches that came with it. The current 1641 is an absolute dream to drive. (but a dog) Laughing

The 2332 will eventually go back in it unless I find a better donor-car.
I'd really like to put fuel injection/crank trigger setup on the big motor and make it more reliable/drivable for the street. The dual weber's were a bitch to tune and never ran right.

Pulled my engine enough to slide in and swap out the clutch disk.

Last week I pulled up to curbside pickup at Best Buy. A guy came up to my bug and asked if i wanted my purchase in the trunk. I smiled and said yes. He opened the "trunk" and was just standing there dumbfounded so i got out and said " Oh sorry, I forgot I had the spare motor in the trunk."

Then I said " The regular motor is up under the hood" and I went to the front and pretended it was stuck, and said "ya, you know, regular motor up front..."

The poor chap was like "wow, I never seen a car with two motors, wow".

So I said have a nice day and gave him a nice blast of my VW sport exhaust Smile

Rebuilt the 1600 in my 74 super this spring. Reconditioned original german crank, rods and heads. Added dual Kadrons (with pod filters since the original ones were rubbing on the body), Vintage Speed Exhaust and an Engle W90 cam. Running very nicely. Considering 88mm machine-ins with Steve Tims Super Stock P&P heads as my project next winter - give it a little more pep without splitting the case again. I can use the P&C/heads on another stock build I have all the parts for. This is an addiction.

Hilarious!! ... So you never opened the hood to show him the invisible motor? You know he is telling all his friends in the store that he just saw a car with 2 motors LOL ... What was he like 22? It amazes me these 20-somethings that have no idea what this car is and that the engine is in the back.

I had a couple trees in the yard cut down a few weeks ago, and I had to park my Bug (that I had just gotten the night before) out on the street ... One of the 2 guys to came to cut the trees down had no idea what the car was ... he looked like he was about 24 ... the other guy (30's) had to tell him what it was.

Heres the engine in my 'new' (to me) toy. It's an 1835cc, 044s, twin 40 Dells, full flow with crank fire ignition system hidden under the rear seat making it fully mappable/tuneable:
