I know many of you have so much more rust on your cars than I do, but I am curious if this is structural or just cosmetic rust.

I was doing some work on my car last week and noticed the rear drivers wheel well had some rust, and then found it started by the stock jack point.

This was behind the running board.

This is inside the wheel well

I obviously need to close this up, should i just get some sheet metal and buzz it in? Should I get a new little corner of the body and buzz it in?

I'll jump in with cement boots on ...

Unfortunately that looks like heater channels that need attention.
You mite find more areas the deeper you dig.

Best to brace the body, separate body from pan, & get it all.

What does the area behind back seat look like?

Sorry for bad news but that is considered structural even tho it's not frame head or chassis spine.

Best to you ... stay safe

PS:
Do your doors close ok ?

Yeah, if that's California rust, it's pretty extreme. Try shining a flashlight into the front heat outlets where the occupants' feet rest, see if you can spot rust in there. There may be similar corrosion lurking at the front of the channels.

Arizona VWs do not generally have that issue.

Here in Ohio that's a rust-free bug.

You'll have to open it up to replace those two areas anyway. Look inside and see how it is. If its not so bad inside brush or spray the insides with converter (I'm liking Xion Labs converter primer) and close it up with some welded sheet metal. My guess is there is a lot of life left in that.

P.S. don't use the jack point anymore they are not robust to begin with.

jinx758

I was a little concerned about this, but everything else seems like its solid, ill dig deeper this weekend. thanks for the advice!

The doors close without issues

Busstom

This car came from Salt Lake City about 15 years ago so maybe a little salt rust... I don't really see anything too bad anywhere else...but I will have to look deeper this weekend.

Cusser

There has to be water and or humidity to make rust Smile

Buggeee

Yeah that is why I called out California rust. heh.

I think you have the "easiest" advice, Ill try to dig more in this weekend.

No matter what I end up doing, when I "fix" this, ill also cut off the jack points.
