mine is the same. I think it takes up to 2500-2800 rpm's for the alternator to start charging the battery. or does it have something to do with the voltage reg? someone with more knowledge of these things should have a better answer.

Not sure if this info is that useful to you but...
I am in an 81 cal. air cooled, and when I first start the engine my battery light will stay on until I gently touch the accelerator (to get to maybe 950rpm). After that the battery light goes out and stays out.

The age-old question. Are you grounds good and clean?

Thats what I've read a few times before, and when the light is on the battery is not being charged, quite a few 80's VWs do this..

it's nothing more serious than the fact that alternators need to be spun at a minmum RPM to "excite the field" and get it charging. once the field is excited the RPMs can drop off some and it will continue to charge.

sometimes when we start our engines, it revs up enough in the startup onit's own to get the alternator going... other times when we start it's a nice gentle start and it's not spun up enough to get that field going.

or at least that's what I learned in my first year of the Sally Struthers Engineerin' skool! Yesterday I couldn't even spell enjineer, now I are one! Shocked

I have had my '85 for 17 years, and it has never flickered at low rpms.

I picked up my '87 two years ago, and it just started doing it earlier this year. It's charging, but just off idle it flickers.

I now read that it's somewhat normal, but it still drives be up the @#$&ing wall.

I do not have an aux. battery relay, but I have not looked at the alt. regulator as Dogpilot mentioned to see if it solved this issue. Looks like a pretty inexpensive 'try'....if yours is replaceable.

Ok guys, tried troubleshooting the wiring and it's correct. Changed alternator within a month ago with a regulator. Also, batt. only 1 year old but I drained that batt. 4 times and recharged it. I'm going to try to recharge the batt. again and have it fully charged to see if the light will go away.
We'll see Shocked

I have the old Gowesty kit (with the relays, not an isolator).

When I blip the throttle to get the batt light off I can here the relay under the seat click "on" at the same time as the light going off. FYI.

Got the results and it didn't work. Well, I guess I'll have to trace the wiring again to the alternator. Crying or Very sad

IT'S Fixed!
Bad regulator.
The wire that holds the brushes in the alternator ripped.
So, I just fixed it.

I have had a similar experience when a not so old battery just couldn't hold a charge. I don't know if it was just dropped in a strange way at some point or if it was just a factory defect. I replaced it with the same battery model and it has not been an issue since. Good luck.
