I have a 1982 westy that recently had a vr6 conversion done, now I am in the middle of replacing all the ball joints, tie rod ends and all the bushings. I am having trouble figuring out how to get the speedo cable out of the spindle. I have the spindle off the van, does the cable simply just pull out of the spindle?
I haven't pulled on it too hard as I don't want to break it if that's not the proper way of removing it.
Thank you and have a great day!

IIRC, the only thing holding the speedo cable on the spindle end of things is the locking ring on the outside of the grease cap. Sounds like you've already got past that. Try a little tap, a little pull...

Cool

Yes, once the circlip is removed from the speedo cable next to the grease cap, the cable and sheathing just pull out of the backside of the spindle. There is a rubber grommet in the spindle and the pressure from that is all that is holding the sheathing in place. Sometimes it takes a very good pull to get an old one out. When you put in the new one, a little lube on the sheathing makes it slide right in.

My speedo hasn't worked in the last 10 years, when I removed the spindle/cable, I noticed that the end of the cable that plugs into the little black box towards the front of the van has got a piece of the box stuck in the threads of the cable, this I am assuming would be why the speedo isn't working. what is the box called? does anyone know where to find a new one?

Forget about the black box. You don't need it. I think that used to be tied into the emissions system. Run a one piece cable from the wheel to the speedo.
