Wondered where/what is the best auto bra for a type 3. Planning to get the Squareback front repainted, and realized all that paint is going to end up the same way with out a bra at least part of the time.

Thank you for any suggestions! Very Happy

to each his own but I've always thought of them as ugly and unnecessary. a bra will stop small rock chips but its not going to do anything for you in the event of an accident. rock chips are inevitable and part of driving a car -- its not a museum relic.

if you really want one though, you can get them from a few suppliers, but I have heard they do more harm than good, but allowing moisture to collect between the surface of the fabric and the paint of the car -- causing spots, mold, fading, etc.

plus out where you are the UV rays will destroy it in no time flat -- I've gone through FOUR different car covers of varying costs and "guarantees"... none have survived being out in the socal sun.

Do not do it! Bra's are horrendously ugly. If you don't drive behind someone on gravel roads and you'll avoid most nicks and chips. After about 40,000 miles and 5 years of driving on gravel roads through southern Mexico, I only have two chips on the bumper of my truck. I would rather see a chip or two than seen an ugly bra!

it's not just me then! they look terrible and don't do shit.

if it was an extremely rare and classic car that was practically trailer queen status I'd consider it but honestly for a VW its overkill.

you can be like the ricers and put blue painters tape all over it Rolling Eyes Rolling Eyes

My front is covered with chips, and some have rust. I know it may not last a long time, but wanted to use it while I am driving a lot; not parked for weeks. Hate to make progress, only to get further damage. I care not about making it into a relic, just cared for. Wink

I know it is only good for small partials, not large rocks, which will dent it anyway. I want to keep from getting down to bare metal, and rusting again.

I have read articles from Porsche folks, and they have no trouble. You have to fold the inside in carefully, and keep it clean. In El Cajon, we do not have a moister problem, and I would not leave it on during the rain. If it did get wet, you take it off, and get it dry A.S.A.P..

Oh, and I like the look to a degree, but I do not do accessories just for looks. Wink

fair enough. aside from the quality products glenn suggested you can get some from TMI or Sewfine... or both IIRC. I don't know that anyone besides them makes them for T3s.

Your extremely lucky then. My GTI has many little chips and imperfections all of the front of it. And I drive normal highways! I do have a bra for it, but it really only gets used for long haul trips. Frankly it's a pain to keep clean for normal day-to-day use.

As for the comment on the blue tape. I've used that in the past (before I had the bra) to keep the front end clean on the way to a car show. It's mainly for bugs and dirt and to save on cleaning the car at the show.

Um, a truck sits higher...

Our roads are full of gravel, and gets kicked up. The front of the Ford looks horrible!

I rather wear something ugly, than to have permanent ugliness. Wink

Wow you guys are semi retarded or something. Ok, just driving around here in what some of you consider the third world, 18 wheelers kick up and drop all kinds of little fragments from all the cement, quarry activity. Flicks shit onto my windshields and fronts ALL the time. I dont wear my bra here as i dont drive the notch so much round these parts.

Ok thats just here where its semi nasty. Diving cross country that useless bra saved the front from numerous rocks-broke one of the headlight lens they were so bad, and all kinds of ass fricken tumble weed bushes.

When I got to my destination it comes off, with all the shit load of bugs collected over a 4 day trip Wink

Luck favors the prepaired, rust grows in a manly mans rock chip Rolling Eyes

And if you leave the bra on to long causing fade, mold or any despair to your paint you deserve it for being a lazy ass tard and not removing it as needed.

Jason, thank you for the reply. Now, I am not feeling strange about wearing a condom! Wink Laughing

Broke your lens! Shocked Good golly! Oh, and got to love tumble weed! Mad Thank the Russians for the non-native invasive species.

Good point about bugs!

Also good point about being prepared!

I plan on taking it off when I am not using it. If I am making an errand or quick trip, I doubt I put it on.

Here are several alternatives:

Get an ugly ass black bra and take it to an upholsterer. Have them use it as a pattern and get one sewn up out of clear vinyl. Make sure that the car is washed and waxed well before installation.

When you repaint the car, add a flex additive to the paint. Use the flex paint on the nose, rockers, and in the wheel wells. If anything chips that, it would have chipped it through the bra anyways.

There's a clear adhesive "stone guard" you can buy that is easily permanently installed, and almost invisible. You'll see it on the front edge of hoods on many late model trucks. You can't hurt it.

Or, use an ugly black bra the way notchboy told you to.
