I really like the colored string. I just did mine with the black it came with.

Do you have a link or thread to the skid plate specs and/or blueprints?

I emailed them to Everett, he'll put them in the archives soon.

Spent some time on the front axle today. First unboxed a shipment from Just Kampers, they supplied us with all the parts for the front axle and then some. Thanks JK!

We dropped the front axle:

And stripped it down to just the beam

The beam is now sent off to get adjusters welded in. We're going to raise the front a little bit. In the meanwhile we started cleaning and painting some of the old parts. Just did the backing plates and the brake booster. Also cleaned the brake fluid resevoir and pressure switches and installed them on the new master cylinder.

The adjusters should be done next weekend, then we can start painting the axle and get everything checked out and reassembled again.

That's it for now!

So, with the adjusters, you'll be able to change your front ride height? Who is doing the work for you?

BTW, your bus is awesome, can't wait to hear how it handles the trip!

Thanks!

You can raise a bus just the same way as you lower it using the adjusters. They are welded in by a friend from the Dutch T2 owners club.

Picked up the beam today, great work by Corne here in the Netherlands.

Adjusters from justkampers.com welded on a '78 Bay beam.
The slit is to indicate the stock setting. This setup allows for a raise or slight drop.

The upper adjuster is opposite to where the securing bolt is on a stock beam. There is no room between the tubes to allow any adjustments to be made once installed (due to shift rod etc running in between the tubes)

Hey,

Great thread! I look forward to following you on your journey. Can you please explain to me how these adjusters work?

Thanks!

Excellent story, I look forward to seeing more of this thread. Very Happy
Is there an english version of the Oranje Trophy website? Also Did you get the Megasquirt installed, if so were the results positive?

The torsion leaves are held in place by a locking block in the center of the beam. The adjuster bolts are attached to this block. By rotating the block you can change the preset tension in the leaves. Thereby raising or lowering your ride.
On stock beams the center block is just locked in one position.

We're still working on an English version of the website, it should be available soon.

The megasquirt isn't installed yet. We'll drop the engine and gearbox sometime soon. We planned to replace the transaxle and at the same time service the engine and get the trigger wheel installed. When it's back in we can start on the wiring harness and see what happens next Razz . We expect the transaxle to be ready for pickup somewhere this week, so as soon as we finish up the front axle we can drop the engine.

Still working on the front beam. Wasn't easy to get those arms in place with the extra tension on the torsion leafs.

I am wondering why you chose to raise the front end using the adjusters vs. using lift spindles? Is there an advantage of one over another? I ask because I am thinking of a lift and want to know the benefits of each.

Lift spindles are typically welded and often have track width issues. With a torsion adjuster Max can use the stock forged spindles and even if he does break one in Africa he only needs to obtain a stock part to replace it.

Update!

We resumed work on completing the front axle. Front bearings were in superb shape, so we just repacked them with grease and fitted a new seal.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Everything assembled again
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And bolted to the bus
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

In the meanwhile we dropped the engine and transaxle, it's not as mint looking as two years ago.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We were suspecting an oil leak in the bell housing, either from the engine or transaxle. The leaking oil made the clutch slip sometimes and that resulted in a burned flywheel Sad

Seems like it is indeed the transaxle leaking and not the engine... what do you think?
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The oil pump also drizzled some oil, not much, but now the engine is out we can fix this too.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We are also installing a trigger wheel and VR sensor for the Megasquirt FI system.

Future home for the VR sensor

Since the engine bay insulation was starting to look a bit shabby and we read good things here about dynamat, we decided to dynamat the engine bay. First we fitted a layer of Dynamat Xtreme and put a layer of Dyanamat Hoodliner over that.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Dynamat Xtreme:

Done! The pic is a little crappy but it proved a bit hard to get a good picture of the reflective material.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

This is how the engine is looking now
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

We're working overtime to finish up the front and rear axle (we're also giving the rear a slight raise). Also the engine needs to be dressed up again and put back with the new transaxle. We have to attend a show next week, so I better get going! Razz

We're departing on April 3rd and we plan to arrive in Johannesburg June 11th. From then on, we'll be following the Dutch soccer games, so we'll be in Durban June 19th and in Cape Town from June 24th.

We'll probably pass Frankfurt on Saturday 3rd of April, somewhere in the afternoon. We're on a pretty tight schedule to get in Trapani for the ferry to Tunisia. So, we don't have time to drop by I'm afraid. You can see us soaring by on the highway though Razz

We'll carry quite a few, quality should be ok'ish. If the octane level is low we can add octane booster to help it a little. We didn't have problems with it when we headed for Beijing, so I guess we should be fine. Besides, we're not the first people venturing through Africa in a T2.
