Just a quick update, we arrived in Johannesburg 2 days ago, covered about 18000 kms. We did have a few problems along the way. In Italy the MegaSquirt FI system failed, I have not been able to determine why yet, we just switched back to L-jet and kept running that way.
In Sicily the steering coupler failed, while we were parking the coupler bent which ruined the coupler. From there we managed to continue to Tunesia where some friends were coming over who brought a genuine new ones with them. Problem fixed.
In Sudan we drove through a series of huge holes in the desert which caused the left front wheel to lock up in the wheelwell. This bent the entire chassis inwards where the front axle attaches to it. We improvised a little here with some welding and hammering and managed to get the whole assembly going again. The next day we continued over a tar seal road instead of though the desert. We replaced the front tyres with smaller ones, problem solved.
After the road to hell in northern kenya the left front shock absorber failed and the bump stops ripped. We managed to find new bump stops in Nairobi and we carried spare shocks so that was an easy fix.
From there on it was straight sailing, no problems whatsoever, or at least not with the car. The Camper Special engine did it's job effortlessly again and so did the new transmission we got from Rancho.
I'll post pictures and some more stories later, just wanted to let you guys know we and the bus made it. Only about 1500 kms to go to Capetown. _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt Injection & Ignition // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD

Have you watched Long Way Down?
Ewan McGregor and Charley Boorman ride motorcycles from the northern tip of Scotland to Capetown, via a similar route to yours until midway down through Africa.
It's one of my favorite bits of TV ever, we just finished watching it last night. We watched Long Way Round (riding east from London to NYC) about 3 months ago.
I am SO jealous of your journey. |

I'm not sure what's more exciting: that you made it all the way to SA or that we may snag the world cup this time.
Hup Holland, both ways.

Yeah, there were good shots of your bus, the orange beetles, and the bigger beer-bus also. Was hoping the ESPN folks would get you in an interview. Congratulations on your successful trip.
What's next? Off to London in 2012, and floating to Brazil in 2014? Good job. _________________ Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups.

Thanks everybody! The trip was crazy, even more because we got to the finals. Too bad we couldn't bring home the cup, but we'll continue until we lay our hands on it!

Guys,
what an accomplishment!! This trip was even more of a challenge than the Beijing trip, you have certainly earned my respect!
I haven't been following your trip as much as I should and just checked in on the thread today..
The fact that the megapuke system failed doesn't surprise me at all, chances are the either heat or vibration or both combined to kill the unit. The system has worked great for many, but few have put it through what you have.. Remember what my thoughts were on it?? They didn't come from anything other than actual experience.
How are the temps this time around?? What kind of ambient temps have you seen? How about CHT and oil temps? Was the engine running cooler with the MS system than L jet?
I'd love to tak an excusrion with you! Where are you going next? _________________ Jake Raby

I'm glad this popped back up again, so I didn't have to track it down.
My wife ad I are 7 episodes in to Long Way Round. Great stuff. Long Way Down is next. _________________ M-Plate

Some snapshots from Egypt
First sighting of the great pyramids upon entering Cairo
Waking up after a sandstorm, on top of some sand dune
Black Desert
Of into the White Desert
Still the outskirts of the White desert
White Desert central, the piece of rock behind the bus is known as 'the chicken' _________________ 1978 T2b ASI Riviera Plan I // Camper Special with MegaSquirt & EDIS // 091 with 5.14 R/P and Peloquins LSD
