|
|
I have a 3" lift so I have some room to put a fuel shutoff valve under the stock tank in the front my buggy. Struck out at a hardware store and two auto parts stores looking for what I wanted. Next stop will be a plumbing/heating shop, hoping I can find something for a furnace that is small enough to work. Any suggestions? |

Motorcycle aftermarket vendors... What tank are you using? I have one I could send you. You have a PM. _________________ Southside Buggistas VW & kit car club

Why not get early fuel selector like on pre 60's bugs... Connects to existing fitting on tank gives you a main, reserve and off position....

You could pick up a snowmobile fuel shut off valve from polaris or skidoo dealers. plumbs inline, can be bolted through a piece of sheet metal, just an on/off ball valve.
If you can fit a stock type valve with reserve that'd be best though.

Thanks guys. I had thought the old reserve taps used a different style bung on the bottom of the tank, but my local air cooled guru confirms that they are the same. He adds that the were standard equipment on Bugs in Europe long after they were no longer available in the US, so they will definitely fit later model tanks like mine. |

I have a brass 1/4" gate valve which would do the trick except it would just hang and I didn't like that.
I think I will do a combination of hardware here that will give me some flexibility for disassembly and service. I'll get the OEM one up front for ease of removal of the fuel tank and for seasonal shut downs where I would like to blow the lines clear.
I'll mount the gate valve in the rear between where it comes out of the tunnel and where it enters the engine tin. That will make for an easy disconnect point for removing the engine. I've always hated crawling under my bugs and shoving a screw in the fuel line while the fuel runs down my arm.
Some redundant theft protection too...i doubt a car thief would think there were TWO fuel valves. |

I used a Briggs & Stratton fuel shut-off valve I got from a lawnmower parts place.
It was very easy to splice into the rubber fuel line. |

Why do you need a shut-off? At first it seemed like a good idea, then I got thinking "when would I need/use this?" Might be good for theft deterant although. |

UH,
Here's the cliff's notes from one of my posts above;
Component isolation for removal/repair/storage (tank, lines, engine).
Theft prevention (they will only get as far as two float bowls will get them.)
Oh, yeah, and one more reason: No such thing as overdoing excess. I work for the Department of Redundancy Dept Dept. |

I have been looking for a 12v shuttoff valve myself. Would make a good anitheft devise with a hidden power switch for it. _________________ Street legal fiberglass rocket ship

Mine is standard hardware store fittings but I had to re-thread the tank fitting to 1/8" pipe thread. Didn't have a servicaeable stock fitting anyway.
Used only as a maintenance shut off...could be used as an anti-theft by making an extension handle into the passenger compartment but then I got thinking I would probably not really use it anyway. |
