got the thermostat tower all apart, thermostat out; there is a ton of sealant in there. i'm assuming it's some kind of rtv. i will replace that where i see it but was wondering about the senders. do they get some kind of high temp thread tape? but doesn't the gauge temp sender ground through the body of the tower? so maybe not...?
the way the senders sit in the plastic housing seems ludicrous. both mine leaked after a fresh install, can't believe that ever works. _________________ '74 transporter panel

Yes. The single wire temp sensor grounds through thermostat body.
No. Don't put tape on temp sensor threads.
I've never had any leaks at VW sensors using O ring and clip.
A leak possibly due to wrong size O ring?
Those plastic cooling system parts can warp over time.

the first of the two leaks went to a local garage and they surmised that the installer had reused the O ring and that it just hadn't held. i'd assume the same for the second.
thanks for the final word on the tape. i RTVed the gasket for the head mating surface, the last installer did not. might this be a problem? _________________ '74 transporter panel
