A. It's part of a pollution control system.

B. Tied to a canaster under the tins.

C. Don't need it. You'll see it on mid 1970 Beetles from California. I took mine off and changed manifolds.

D. Your pictures is a Beetle but they were on 1974 Things too.

yep, take it off. NO need for it. i mad ea simple block off plate out of some aluminium i had lying around, or any thin piece of metal will work. Simply cut out a rectangle shape, drill two holes for the bolts, and a little silicone. Or even just tap the hole, for a small bolt, and also a little permatex to prevent any leakage.

Is it causing a problem? Is your car subject to annual emmisions tests?
If you remove that part, you also need to cap off the other end or you'll have an exhaust leak.

I am required to have my vehicle tested every year. Im pretty sure that not many VW's down here have this emission filter system installed and they seem to pass inspection. The device is not causing a problem, but it is in the way of my customization. If the car will pass without it, which I'm pretty sure it will, then I would rather get rid of it and make some room back there.

thanks,

Ben

Be careful, in some states annual inspections include visual inspections. If you are missing part of the original pollution control equipment, you may fail regardless of whether or not you pass the emission test.
