Hey dawg, nice car, I saw it when it was still in Mark's garage! A 'beaut!
I bought his '57 ragtop, but too bad it'll be stuck in my garage for a couple years under resto. Hope to meet you and see your new car again at one of the local shows!

Hey Blake
Mark mentioned your name and the car, he said you are doing great work!
Definitely looking forward to meet you and some of the local folks. I'll be doing a tune-up of the car this saturday morning at Franklin's, then I'll start thinking about going to some shows before the weather *really* gets bad.
Do you have a ride thread for your car?

Hello! Thanks for helping a newbie
I am *totally* new to this... I grew up as a KID with a Beetle and a Combi in France... I have the love for them, but learning it all from scratch as an "owner"
I bought it last week, and I only drove it a little bit. Is the fuel filter bad? What do you see? It does look dark...
The lighting is tweaked on the photos, it is possibly lighter. I will look in person and take a close shot of the filter to double check with you
I am going for a tune-up at Franklin's this saturday AM... There are lots of misfires and hesitation happening. VW Veteran neighbor said it was the carbs that need to be balanced... could it be (just) the fuel filter?
Thank you for your help!

I will ask Franklin on saturday
I wouldn't know - I am new to this, and got this car last week from someone who knows VW well (markm, on thesamba). I understand Franklin (well known shop) did the engine, not sure why he did something that is considered a hazard / wrong...
Thanks
I hope you enjoy the thread/car, beside the filter _________________ L331 Horizon Blue January 1957 Canadian Deluxe Oval Beetle

Your car is SICK!!! Love the color, the stance, wheels and engine is just right. No bullshit chrome everywhere and it looks to be done clean, yes, except the fuel filter, move it. Your carbs could very well need to be synched, but if you're doing a tune up then it'll all be gone through anyways, nice car. |

Hey thank you for the kind words!
Today was *tough* ... I drove the Beetle mainly because I had to go get the rear tires changed. Drove to work (couple miles from tires shop). On my way home tonight, it was a NIGHTMARE: it would not start... Eventually did, but litterally stalled at every red light and stop sign - had to rev (slightly) in neutral with e-brake on in order to stay on
so YES I think I need a tune-up BAD on it ... I just hope I can make it to Franklin (25 miles trip) without losing my sanity
Thanks for the support ... hopefully better news from me after the tune-up saturday
Take care

Congratulations Manuel! I hope your car brings much enjoyment. I'm curious about the photos that you specify are original (the stance , the tire profile , the accessory mirror). Also , the photo with the child ... is that photo vintage (exhaust)? |

OK my car is at the shop
Franklin saw that it doesn't start, and behaves strangely after it (eventually) starts. Carbs were already perfectly aligned - that's not the problem. Oil sender unit is dripping oil quite a bit too - not the cause of the main issue, but he will fix that too.
At least it's in good hands, and he did see that something was not working correctly...
Manuel
PS: I didn't bring up gas filter placement yet - one thing at a time. I also want to fix rust on the heater channels... Both will be next. _________________ L331 Horizon Blue January 1957 Canadian Deluxe Oval Beetle

Franklin figured it out... The Coil and the Condenser were shot. I bet it will run better now (!).
They are replaced... I can't wait to go pick up my Oval! _________________ L331 Horizon Blue January 1957 Canadian Deluxe Oval Beetle

Manuel, don't forget to talk to him about relocating the fuel filter!
Happy for you man, I'm going to live vicariously thru you until my 57 rag is done! Gonna be awhile, but it will be a kickin' journey. Making good progress weekly!
BTW, Search in the oval beetle forum for my bug thread. (should prolly start one here). It's ugly, but holy scheit is it in good shape, i.e. very very minimal rust. Also, I got the birth certificate back and it's an original Seattle ragtop car! F'in stoked! |
