Noone seems to know about this VW color...
If someone ever get the PPG / modern formula equivalent, PLEASE post it here! I would go get some mixed and repaint my now-jupiter-blue wheels.

I have a car with 27,400 original miles and it still has the 4 original rims on it, (but NOT original tires!) seems the outer wheel color is NOT Horizon Blue..........but just a tad shade darker ??? but looking more grey than it's blue???
I'll post some photos once I've cleaned the wheels.......

Well, there's a shot of my car and the original colored wheels......I'm going to leave the wheels alone with the "patina" that have for now, but in the future if I decide to redo the rims, I'll have a paint shop mix/match the color from the wheels.
I real-life they look more Blue-Grey than in the photo, they remind me of a WW2 Luftwaffe color RLM 75 - Violet Grey.

Beautiful car!
Would it be possible to scan the color at a paint shop, and post here the (modern & usable) formulas, so all of us can get our rims painted with the correct Greyish Blue color, at any local paint shop? _________________ L331 Horizon Blue January 1957 Canadian Deluxe Oval Beetle

Thank You Sir!
Yes, I'll see what I can do as soon as the car is registered and on the road

Here's another shot of my wheels.......
It's really hard to get a real close lifelike color shot to a photograph, (on crappy non film digital) but as I've said once the cars back on the road I will get out to try to get the rim color professionally color matched, so I can help out anyone else here who is looking for the correct color to restore their wheels.

Having an og paint Horizon blue spare I had the wheel scanned and colour matched. Our wheels are being painted this week so will post a pic of the results. Here is all the information I have along with modern dupont mix codes. there is a paint chip attached in one of the pics. I found it interesting that the closest match came in as capri blue.
Hope that helps but probably up for more debate |

I think L335 Capri has a little more Blue in it then the wheels do, the wheels seem to have more of a turn to Grey.
(I drove a 1958 Capri Blue car for many years when I lived in Germany).
Nice work there Dave, I'm still going to scan my wheels and see what that says too.....then we can compare.

Sounds good. My wheels have been powder coated in black and are now at the paint shop awaiting the above hues for the fronts. I will get a pic as soon as they are done. We didn't get our spare done yet so we have a comparison to check against when there finished. We used the spare for the scan as its obviously had the less exposure to the elements so less fading etc. pics soon |

Yeah, that chip you have looks good (like it's getting there, Capri Blue by far is the CLOSEST paint to the original wheel paint, just needs a touch more of Grey) my wheels are original paint, but I also have to account on some slight fading on my wheels since 1957, (which might bring out the Grey more?) but the Capri Blue is a rocking color.
I think that L 335 Capri wasn't first used/introduced untill like September 1957 on the first Big Window cars etc.
Now did anyone here have (or find) any original 1956/57 written/printed VW documents that have any L code listed as our outer wheel color? (Horizion Blue cars)
Suboval's wheels are the nicest (all Factory original) of anyone's here, if we could hear from him again that would be nice.

Ok, do you have any documents that prove otherwise?
Their might have been a cross-over time in August when both colors might have been used, but I know 100% that L 331 cars built AFTER August 1956 had L33 Dark Greyish Blue outer rings on the wheels. My car was built at the end of May 1957.
Cars built as 1956 models had the Body Color L331 as the outer wheel ring.(built after March 1956)
