Hi all,
This is my 58 bus, originally an 8 seater micro bus it is a walkthrough, the colours are as the original. brought as OG but had to carry out a resto following failing it's MOT on asphalt being used as a filler to hide alot nasties!!!!
Bumpers are original but I have welded up the over rider holes for a cleaner look.
Taken of the additions made to the dash and taken it back to what I believe to be correct for the year apart from the stereo cut out that I wished I had restored back with a blanking plate Dash shelf was replaced for a thin lipped type during resto.

Sounds like a cool Bus but what was your question?
The ivory knobs are normal
The other Features sound normal for that month & year Bus.
hey that must be you brad, that is one rare bus, rhd and rh cargo doors plus all august 58 stuff. i would order birth certificate for it,i don't think australian assembled, possibly special order tourist import to australia, maybe try (in2vws.com.au ) for info, but has semaphores, crazy rare bus, enjoy, cheers dave _________________ WTB,

the transitional pressbumper versions are really interesting and different buses, the big bumper versions are less interesting but still slightly interesting..............all of them built in this timeframe would have originally had all silver white bumpers even the dove blue commercials...........oh yeah and they should have chrome hubcaps,no painted or primered hubcaps=pressbumper era buses _________________ Have a great day! |

interesting that the Aug truck I posted and the repainted Aug dark blue one earlier in this thread both have non- eyebrow decklids.
Would the 1958 production year trucks have non eyebrow lid while the buses changed over and had eyebrow lid? _________________ Fritz Custom Products

they would have originally had the eyebrow lid................for many years vw "gurus" said the words "58 only decklid" enough that it became true.........so all the believers tossed the original eyebrow lids and bought "58 only" lids.............................but the myth was busted several yrs ago, turns out the flat lid is actually a mid 57-early 58 production lid........most buses built in 58 had eyebrow lids............even more reason to refer to build dates over model yr _________________ Have a great day! |

I used to think that also, until I kept running into '58 buses with painted caps. then I found it in the wheel and tire section of PR.
painted hubcaps for buses started on 6 august 1957, chassis number 273650. so pretty much all '58 commercial buses had painted caps, and all transitional commercial buses had painted caps unless they were M-coded for chrome caps.
this is also backed up by press photos as seen in that good german bus book _________________ .

First, I don't know.
Progressive Refinements has this entry:
29 Aug. 58
VIN # 384816 (Europe)
VIN # 384875 (N. America)
Bumpers
Now: stronger design
Now: Starting handle no longer supplied
You would think that no handle = no other crank start stuff
But I don't know if that is 100% accurate
I found this thread

Also this in another thread, I think he got this from the NEATO changes book, which may or may not be accurate as it looks like they got the information from the Refinements entry above:

First model without the starter crank was 384875 |

Wonder about this then....why is there a longer style crank handle to suit the later style bumpers then if they dropped it earlier.
My May '59 so23 is 36hp and I would have presumed crank start as well being 36 and split case box.??? |

Was "Progressive Refinements" an English, VW of A publication or originally written auf Deutsch?
"No longer supplied crank handle" does not mean quite the same as "hand crank starting not available" and this sometimes suffers in translation.
I know my 23 window August 1958 is 384595 and it has pressed bumpers a crank start apron with AMAG number plate and a crank. The engine was gone when we bought it in 1983. Also eyebrow engine lid and beige grey upper body color. (but those were earlier changes, I think.)
Also, I would take it to mean the change came during August 29,1958, beginning 384,816 and the next 59 chassis went to Europe with Chassis 384,875 being the first of the new spec shipped to USA. It would not surprise me that the change was made in the middle of the day when the pile of old bumpers reached a specific small number to be put into the spare parts supply.
Years ago, this was called "Hobby Shop" auto production. I'd say VW just didn't have so much money in the bank as later. So, they had to use up the stack of early style parts.

I think it's translated from German or done the same time as other language. I know there are German versions but I do not have one or a scan of one. _________________ How to Post Photos

There are several buses in this thread after August 58 and 384875 with crank start apron, even a Jan. 59 bus that Uzi posted. So the crank handle no longer supplied must refer to the handle only and not the apron. _________________ https://instagram.com/mr.ogpaint

I
Pretty nice find.
I wonder what VIN?
Likely a 1958, but it was the state's call in some cases. (Though I'd think the first title was from a MCO Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin, which might have the model year on it.)

the pressed bumper mango for sale is an august 1958 , the vin is literally 21 buses earlier than the blue panel I posted above |
