No, it doesn't matter as long as it's attached it can be either way.
I have some questions about this as well.
1st how do you get it apart?
I can't get the plug to pull out of this one.
2nd is this fully open or partially closed?
It's cold and should be all the way open correct?
what does adjusting that little bolt do ?
Thank you,
David |

1) the front and back halves are crimped together. The only way i could see to get them apart is to grind off the rolled edge, and then figure out some way of putting them back together. There is also a little roll pin that holds the connector in, which is pressed into a blind hole, so it would have to be drilled out. Maybe someone more clever than me has a method.
2) That looks like it is fully open, which makes sense because they certainly had a cold unit when they took the picture. On mine, when fully closed, just the small notch is exposed (it has rotated clockwise)
3) I do not believe that the entire hole should be open. Think about how big the opening is for the throttle body idle bypass. If the AAR was 100% open, you would be essentially doubling (estimating, here), that opening in the TB which seems like you would have a VERY high idle.
Randy in Maine - I am curious about your graphic (very descriptive, btw!). Are you sure the slower/faster labels aren't backwards? When you rotate that screw CCW, it opens up the diaphram more, and turning it CW closes it. There may be something i am missing, but I would expect the opposite results... _________________ '84 Westy (first owner).......but my daily driver has pedals

I pulled that out of the gallery from the "beetle section". It sort of looks backwards, but I had not really thought about it much.
Might want to go here and scroll down a ways for open and shut times and temps....

How fast (or slow) should the disc (valve) open when bench testing this part?
I see this part has a core value so it must be serviceable, in the right hands
Anyone successfully opened one of the sealed type and fixed it?
It looks like the one I have has posts tha can easily be dremelled out to allow halves to separate.
