ok, i wanted to wait until I tried everything before I posted however... here I am. My center pin is completely seized on my front beam. I've tried just about everything except the factory tool.

I tried liquid wrench soaking over a few days, hammers, vise grips to twist the pin (no luck), re-assembled the swing lever and put a new bolt in there, turned the steering wheel hoping to turn/free up the pin however I stripped the bolt since the pin is completely seized and wouldn't rotate.

In short, is anyone out there willing to loan this tool to me?

Any other suggestions? Didn't expect this as hazetguy's description made it sound so trouble-free. Thanks in advance.

hit up beaterbarndoor or doveblue3 here...they had my old factory tool floating around as we thought of it as being totally useless due to never seeing a pin seized...worn out and sloppy but not seized.

Pull the beam, soak it with PB, then hulk out and beat the thing out of there with a large hammer and drift.

I removed the pin using a pitman arm fork and hammer. I used an old sparkplug socket (as the drift) and a 10 pound sledge! Gently of course. Very Happy to remove the bushings.

I had it on a lift, this way I could get a good swing.

I'll rent you one. PM me or email for details.

Pulling the beam sounds like ALOT of extra work I.M.O..

I once spent six hours trying to extract one without the correct tool, and I had a 20 pound slide hammer and various air chisels at my disposal. I think if I knew it would take six hours I would have simply dropped the beam out.

Six hours on your back under a bus pounding UP with all that shit falling on your head. Blech. That would be enough to sour a person on Volkswagens permanently.

Fortunately it was on a lift......but it was a PITA.

I think I got dinner out of the deal, so that more than made up for it.

It would take a lot more than that to sour me on VW's....

And the pin pulls down, not up. There is no way to beat this thing out from the bottom. I suppose you could cut the mushroom head off the bottom, but I think you would likely mess up the lower thrust surface as well.

I had the 20lb slider hammer hooked up on the top and I pulled it straight down. Once I got it to move 1/8" the air chisel took care of the rest.

Sorry, I was thinking of pounding out the bushings not the pin.

if you have room, you could weld something on the bottom of the pin, and use a slide hammer ( by hooking it to what you welded on )

most of the time they fall out!

That truck kept having rust fall off every time he pounded.
He was banging for hours. there was a veritable pile of rust flakes and dirt under the lift. Not to mention the kitty litter soaking up the oil that had exploded out of the motor. It was a long day. It was a long hard, dirty day, and the show was coming up real soon and that truck was going to drive there under its own power dammit.
That day went on for more than a day.
The truck had juat been drug off a farm, where it been sitting for a couple decades.
It was hard to turn the steering wheel, and when you did the center pin complained real loud.
IIRC, the pin was rusted stuck to the bushings, and the bushings were stuck in the beam. What was moving was the swing lever arm was pivoting on the top of the swing lever pin, which it is not supposed to do.

next time we went to go help Vince with a last minute before the show project Greg grabbed the tool

Any creepy spiders come falling down? Rust and benign crud ok, but poisonous spiders slinking down or flopping no way. Good luck on your pin.

turns out i had to remove beam. the tool i tried to use was for earlier buses with two zirk fittings instead of mine having just one. pounded out the pin with a hammer. after a good 6 or 7 blows, the pin budged. i tapped it out along with the lower bushing rusted to the pin. i was happy i removed the beam in the end so i could clean it well. i took it to the local car wash and degreased and pressure washed it.

thanks for all your input and campingbox for the tool lend. even though the tool didnt work out i learned ALOT especially knowing that my beam is a later beam 66 or 67. now off to installing the pin!
