Looks sharp, lots of work in that one.
Hopefully it will run as good as it looks.

Nice work Art, but it doesn't have your trademark blue Alan bolts on the generator stand Wink

Yes It runs WELL!!!

Justin got 98 HP out of it but the TQ was to low (Like 110) So he changed the Venturi"s and got 91hp/122lb TQ

The TQ is what he was after.. Has to pull 4th gear, at 4200 rpm to 5000rpm,

The Carb is a SOLEX Porsche 40p11.. The header was a 1 1/2 1600 Heeader that Justin and I cut up and refitted.. Runs like a chain saw!

I would like to thank Art Thraen and Air Cooled Engineering for allowing me, my brother and our dad to stay after work hours and use the shop and equipment to build our engine and our car. Without this invaluable service, we would not be going to the salt this year.
Thanks Art,
Justin McAllister

As a side issue did the team consider using a Ghia bodyshell instead of the usual Bug?

It's not difficult to see what drives my question as the stock 36hp Karmann Ghia always out performed the stock 36hp bug in magazine road tests, despite carrying the extra weight.

The better aerodynamic shape of the KG more than cancelled out the weight penalty.

98 hp at that altitude is nothing to sneeze at.

Would a plenum, under the carb, help peak power ?
So each cyl is breathing through both barrels.
Might require larger runners to be effective.

That's a very interesting question and something I would like to find the answer to if I had dyno time.

Do you have any parts swaps your going to play with on the dyno justin?

Running on the salt in three short weeks, right? If everything goes according to plan, you guys are poised to set a new Dual Super Stock record!

Good luck you guys, no promises, but I am going to try to make it out to the event to watch.

It would be interesting to measure cylinder pressure,
on all 4 cyl, at 6000 rpm, on a single port motor.

Since the firing order is 1,4,3,2,1,4,3,2,1,4,3,2,...
I'm thinking the VE of cyl 4 and 2 will be higher than 3 and 1.

With adjacent cyl firing in sequence, the first cyl has a greater amount
of time for the manifold runner to fill. The second cyl, significantly less.

A low tech way to measure the difference, would be to pull
plug wires on the dyno. Ideally, removing any plug wire would
show the same power loss.

It is very common for the V8 guys to have a large 4bbl carb
feeding a common plenum, so the same theory should apply.

I believe it was corrected for elevation. Real correction, not the "guesswork" correction i've heard other dyno operators doing. Wink

Justin's been working his tail off on that car non-stop. Each morning I check out what he's done during the night to the car. Less than a week ago, the body was still off the pan. He's going to make his deadline, he'll kill himself doing it, but he'll do it even if he has to work without sleep the last few days to make it.

Justin's level of motivation to get this car done is incredible. Of course his brother and dad are in the mix as well, but Justin seems to be the one wiping himself out to get this one done.

I installed the adjusters into the front beam on his car. "I'm a part of the team!". LOL Wink

Good luck, Justin! You're working your arse off, you'll deserve the record when you get it!

next time for the photo shoot get a clean sheet Wink

as i said in the other thread. nice and stunning work you guys have done there. thanks for keeping the spirit alive.
and please get the record!

and if you meet someone who's specialized in combustion chambers get some knowledge outta him, i think there's still potential eg unshrouding valves and especially the shape of the chamber.

greetings from germany

At the beginning of the year, Bruce Cook contacted me wanting to "pick" my brain and asked me if I had any ideas / parts that would help him break the old DSS
record that had been standing since 1962 @ 94.4 mph. I prepped a pair of SOLEX carbs, 69mm C/W crank, perf. cam, several mech. ad. dist., etc, etc. Needless to say,
they broke the old record and set a new record at: 99.81 mph! Now we are going to see if we can push the limits and try to go over 110 mph. Stay tuned! Mr. Okrasa Cool

John M asked why Justin and Coltons 36hp Challenge car was a bug and not a Ghia. Definitely the Ghia would go faster, all things being the same and some new Ghia bodied 36hp racers will be at the World of Speed next month hoping to gain entry into the new ' "1" Club ' for 36hp racers.

The original 36hp Challenge was conceived five years ago for todays racers to try new technology and techniques to try and beat speeds set in 1961 and 62 using bug bodied VW's. That is why Blackline 57 is a bug, as is Bruce Cooks 51 and the Bruch/Anderson New Age Turbo 36. This allows a fair comparison to the speeds set by Dick Beith and the team of Mel Ellis and Jon Gosvig.

We also expect to see some split window buses competing soon for their own record (as well as the Ghia bodied cars ) and soon hope to be able to share with everyone information on two seperate 2010 entrants whose participation could never have been anticipated, much less hoped for.

Anyway, good luck to all the 36hp Challengers at this Septembers World of Speed (Sep 16-19) on the Bonneville Salt Flats. By the way, VW fans and spectators are welcome also.

May the Speed be with you..........

Burly
