So, it's time to get a whole new exhaust system on my 82 diesel westy. The things been rigged now 3-4 times by the looks of it, and now it just broken off.

I need all 3 pieces. They are a bitch to get my hands on though. Any suggestions as to where to find these things? After market is fine. -Especially if it can make the exhaust any quieter.

I am in the same boat but have a turbo... You definitely need to get the rubber mounts (the first link below).

I hope this helps.

Parts Geek (www.partsgeek.com) has the Diesel muffler listed for $75
http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1982/volkswagen/vanagon/exhaust/muffler.html

and Bus depot has the front pipe (only pipe) listed for
http://www.busdepot.com/details.jsp?partnumber=068251171D

and I forget where Dad had found the rubber mounts fro $5ea.. but they're out there.

It is important to have the 3 rubber muffler mounts installed and to replace them as soon as any fail. Otherwise metal things will start to crack and break. They don't cost much if you look hard, under $10 each, get spares.

This is a DYI kinda fix but I had great success with the ball-cup connections sold at stands headers.

http://www.stans-headers.com/index.htm

His hangers are first rate. The ball cup system allows for a no tension connection. I have had a pipe get stuck on a stump wheeling and it didn't break the pipe or header, it just rotated.

Anyway give it a look.
