this is breaking news from the vanagon list...friday morning...8/21 a listmember just saw a '89 full westy at a volkswagen dealership in catonville MD... russel volkswagen.. this '89 westy only has 114k miles and it still runs and drives...it has NOT YET BEEN PROCESSED thru the C4C program, so it still runs and drives.., the dealership has been using it for display purposes for the C4C program... i called on it.. the sales guy said that if someone gives them the $4500 for it, which is the goverment rebate amount, then they will sell itm free and clear, running and driving...
i would jump on this but i dont have an extra $4500 at the moment..
the guy said that you have until monday.. then they have to sieze the motor...and it cannot be sold after then..
someone please buy this!!!! i have no interest in this other than i hate to see a 114k mile full '89 westy be intentionally destroyed because of somem idiotic goverment program....
russel volkswagens website is russelvw.com and their phone number is 410-744-2300
can someone please cross post this on other list forums and the vanagon resque squad too? please someone has to save this one... |

Got a feeling you would have a hardtime getting them to follow through on selling it to anyone with a running drivetrain. I imagine, since a sales was processed with C4C paperwork, that dealership may risk losing other C4C monies they are owed, outside of this one vehicle. Here's what I'd do, let them "death fluid" the engine, buy the van for less than $4500, and plop a zetec conversion in there.
That would be 100% within the rules of the C4C plan, and a cleaner running vehicle would be on the road. Win for everyone. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

actually i did indeed speak to a salesman there...he confirmed that they would sell the camper outright.. the only reason that they hadnt processed it thru the C4C and siezed the motor yet is that they have it sitting on their lot with the top popped and a big "CASH FOR CLUNKER" sign on it to draw in customers.. but they only have until monday and then they have to sieze the motor if nobody buys it by then...as the C4C program ends monday night nationwide..
he already confirmed he would sell it for $4500.. id be on my way to maryland right now if i had an extra $4500!!
someone must want a '89 westy full camper with only 114k miles!!

Now if we could only get 52 Samba members to chip in $86.53, we could all buy it and one person could have it per week of the year. Sounds like a flawless plan to me. _________________ '87 Vanagon GL Westfalia

I dunno, the stuff that people do to C4Cs scare me. You should have seen what my brother in law did to his 1990 Pathfinder before he turned it in..... _________________ '69 Mike

Hey, looks like there's a a set of three Fiamma brackets on there. Somebody needs to grab those.
Good eye on seeing the damage on the top, above the driver's side. Looks like someone low-bridged it. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

I still don't understand why it's necessary to cook the engine to ensure the vehichle doesn't return to the road.
With 3 billion dollars, you would think they could make a database that tracks all the VIN numbers, and just not let those cars be registered. Sure- some people could circumvent it, but you can't convince me that the government will be monitoring the disposal of these vehicles all that closely anyways.
I'd be all for this program if it didn't just seem so wasteful.
That van there isn't worth $1000. At 115K I'd bet that the cylinder heads just started leaking... about $4000 in deferred maintenance, and $2000 in body work.
I would like that front table though - can some one pull it out for me? |

Seems no one ever considers the environmental consequences of tossing all of those cars, and the similar consequences of having to build all the cars to replace them.
Oh, I forgot, we're in a recession and have to do whatever we can to get people back to work...my bad. _________________ '85 Wolfsburg Weekender |

I'd like to pick it up just for the interior and turn my Syncro Wolfsburg in to a full Westy.
chris32, why can't they sell it after seizing the engine? I'd even help them "dispose" of it for free.

Suppose the owner drove it in with first gear only, with a broken 3/4 slider hub, or with almost no oil pressure.
How do you know it wasn't towed within a 1/2 block of the dealer and limped in?
Combine that with the body damage, and it's from Maryland!
Obviously hasn't been stored indoors.
Can you imagine how much rust it has?
Considering how this hasn't been cared for, I wonder if it's worth 4500. _________________ One of these days I'm gonna settle down,

levi, someone had to say it. $4500 for a good interior and possibly not much more would't be a good deal at all. |

Oh man, just looking at the westy kitchen and doors and drawers and
REALLY?
All wasted? We're scrambling for parts. Those stove knobs alone might get a cage match out in the lot, wouldn't that draw people to the dealer? _________________ Julia
