I left for vacation for two weeks and left the notch in the garage. Now that I am home, I went to jump in it today for the first time and it runs like sh!t. I futzed around with it and noticed a few things. First, obviously getting waaaay too much gas from either carb because thick black sooty exhaust and raw fuel come from the tail pipe. I swapped out the plugs, swapped the coil, checked point gap and timing, checked cap and rotor, valves, ... the works. The damn thing will not stay running and even with my foot on the pedal it runs terrible. It ran great when I parked it two weeks ago (as Tram said, they all run when you park 'em) and now.... CRAAAAPY!

Any ideas?

This may be a noob-ish question, but how do I clean the idle jets? Where are they and what do I do to get 'em out? BTW, they are Solexes....

they are on the outsides of the carbs. Take tehm out and blow em out with compressed air or very carfully stick a small needle in the tip. Pedro makes me do this everytime my car runs like crap and won't idle.

Consider this: Left my mostly stock 66 parked facing uphill for a week with a full tank of gas. Returned to find the case full of gasoline and a puddle under the car. Turned out gas had flowed by gravity from the tank, thru the pump, and into one of the carbs thru the crappy needle and seat that comes in the typical replacement carb gasket kit.

I did Tram's on-the-fly-carb-overhaul trick... no dice. I also noticed that the little overflow tube at the top of the throat constanly dumps gas. Also, my oil smells like gas. So I pulled the top of the carb off. The float seems to be floating fine (dont know much else about it) and I pulled the needle and seat. The pin moves freely and I sprayed it all out with carb/parts cleaner... no clogs. So how do I know if its bad? What do I do from here?

Reuse your old needle and seat whenever you can. The ones in the carb kits are like you say. Crappy.
BTW, do you have one of the new stamped steel style fuel pumps? They do not have the check valve in them that the original ones had.
That is what that module on top the fuel pump with 4 screws did. Would not allow fuel to pass unless the pump was producing pressure.
Earlier ones had the little module in the fuel line ahead of the pump. #34 in the illustration.

I reassembled the carb after cleaning the needle and seat. That seemed to fix the problem... Yay! I am still not sure whether it is something I will have to replace. I do not know how to check to see if it is going bad enough to warrant installing a crappy one from a new kit.

As far as the fuel pump, I have an original one with the plastic cap but it is not the type with the four screws on top. It is the type pictured on the right in the diagram. I do have the little module (#34) is there though. Perhaps it is not working... How do I check it? Oddly, my car has sat for longer than two weeks before and always has fired right back up. Darn antiques! Very Happy

Sounds like your problem was the needle and seat.
