My March 54 buildt panel ,Vin #2-079351, has a 6.
no clue
still the idea with the day of the week sounds logical, anybody got an 8,9 or 0, that would smash the theory.
my October 54 Oval bug has a 5 and another 5 in the front pan ( as indicated by the thread mentioned above.)

Might have been a way of quickly distinguishing between nearly identical chassis intended to be built as completely different variants that happened to be neighbors on the production line. What are your plans for the project, Frankenstein it back into a Barndoor or make it into a trike? _________________ Check my classifieds for kewl gauges:

i could swear this topic had been discussed but it may have been erased when the samba had its blackout a while back. there are stamped numbers throughout the buses. one on the dash frame, one on the upright support behind the front seat back and likely other areas. my theory was that it was just line worker stamp numbers to indicate who did the assembly on certain sections.or inspection passes. _________________ www.thebustransfer.com

perfect, though now I need a "0" as well. Getting all these barndoors I think is an attainable goal, unless # 8 and 9 surface, in which case I'm out! |

Bringing back an old topic.
I talked about this to a friend of mine who is a collector of German built Ford cars from the 1960s70s. He said Ford stamped their panels with a number according to the press they were stamped in. that way they were able to build cars with different parts quality.
This is just a new idea. how many panel presses were there in Wolfsburg ??
my post BD 1955 WB panel van also has a 4 stamped in the rear corner bracket.
Another thing that came to my mind:
From production pics we can see that they spot welded the whole side as a unit ( incl drip rails, window openings, panels, ribs and outer rocker panels, a posts and rear corners, no ? what if that digit stamped into the rear corner brace was a quality 'tag' for the whole assembly, like say engine case halfs.
for the record, the pssgr door on my 55WB panel has a 1/4 chalk marking on inner og paint , while the rear corner support has a 4 stamped. _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !

Is the unusual thing for Barndoors that it was stamped on the right hand gusset?
My October '56 single cab has a number stamped on the left hand one. _________________ Andy

I guess we never got the right conclusion out of these numbers ?!?
While checking the assembly line pics
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=332719
I stumbled on this again
On many of these pics we can make out the hydraulic/pneumatic (?) fixtures, jigs and stands. It is clearly visible to the right in the pic above. This is where several body parts/sub assemblies would be united for the complete body.
We know that the floor/chassis assemblies and the full side panels A to D pillar were assembled on seperate jigs. Now my idea is, what if those sub assemblies and each of their fixtures/jigs and tolerances were stamped those mistery digit, in alignment with the final assembly jig and /or line # ???
judging from the pics, there were a few assembly lines, but supposedly not as many as 10 or 20.... it looks to me more like 5-8 lines or so ?
maybe a possible explanation, since my Wolfsburg built 55 has that digit but Hannover buses aren't reported to have them, do they ? _________________ Hotrods, Fords, Veedubs and Triumph Twins !
