I have a VW Lobo buggy w/ an 1835 engine, dual carb Webbers. I bought a wiring harness and attempted to wire it up. Obviously very wrong.

Basically, to the starter I have the battery and alternator wire on one post. From the starter solenoid a wire goes to the ignition switch. The ignition switch has four posts. 3 on the side and one in the middle. The three on the side say bat, ign, and acc. And the middle is st, starter I presume.

The ignition coil has two wires (red and black) which go into the side of the distributor. The other coil wire (from the same side as the red wire) to the ignition switch. When I pulled the dist cap off, it had no contacts or points (electronic ignition?) This I where I think I fried something based on the smell from that area. I also don’t get a spark from the coil anymore

We basically had no idea which wires go to what on the ign. switch because the diagram only has 3 unmark dots on diagram. So we were switching wires around on the switch to try to start it. We also didn’t know we would cause a problem.

Questions
1. On what posts of the ignition switch do we attach the coil wire, generator wire, and starter wire? And any other wires?
2. Are we supposed to run a wire back from the battery to the bat post?
3. What did I fry?
4. Is there an obvious question I forgot to ask?

Thanks ahead of time.

I don't know about the key switch, I've never had to get in there, but the coil should have switched power to one side, and the other side should ground through the points or electronic ignition inside the distributor. When the circut is closed, the coil "charges" and when the points open, ZAP.
The electric choke and idle cut off jet will also tie into the hot side of the coil.

If one leaves the ignition in the ON position without the engine running, this will most definately fry an electronic ignition. "What's that sizzling sound?" followed by "Why don't I have spark anymore?"

Retterath, speaking form experience.

Wire up the electric ignition backwards and it takes less than a second to fry them. Put the points back in until you get it running and then decide if you want the electronics again.

Here's a basic wiring diagram (stole from someone):

Stolen from ME!...

IGN on switch goes to terminal 15 on coil (+) Also red wire from dist module... (black wire from dist module to Terminal 1 (-))

ST on Switch goes to terminal 50 on starter solenoid, (push on terminal next to trans)...

ACC goes to anyting you want ON with key off ( Radio, CB, CD player)..

BAT is main line from battery that supplies 12VOLTS to complete system...

This may help more...

Go with labels on switch (function), not positions in drawing.....

Also If you have Alternator...

The above graphic is just a guide as to what you may have connected at coil.... Not all wiring will be there if you do not use some of the option presented....

Here is source document to be downloaded and saved by you....

That ok as long as people find it useful... Hate to have it stole for no good reason...

Nothing positive should be going to the distributor. Remove the + (red) wire from the distributor. Check your fuses after you remove it.

Electronic points use a red wire to the + side of the coil.
