Hi i was hoping someone could help me with info on the buses fitted with reduction hubs and the irs sliding half shafts. What country and time period were they made and were the spring plates and pivot arm unique or hybrid split/bay setup, any help would be greatly appreciated, i am trying to source a set of these for a project but they seem very thin on the ground and bugger all info about them, Confused cheers Aaron

If someone makes IRS hubs to attach to reduction boxes, I would like to know, too. I have never heard of this, but I had considered making some.

I guess I don't understand what your talking about?
IRS axles inside of the swing axle tubes connected to an IRS transaxle?
I'm curious.

he's talking about baywindow bus suspension, but with reduction boxes at the wheel.

I did not know there were any factory buses that came equipped with this?

I will most likely be building this kind of suspension within the next year, ive wanted to for a long time.

Brazilian Bay/Split hybrids came out with this setup around 1976.They are basically 15 window splits with a baywindow nose and the big bay window taillights.Quite a few of these were sold here in South Africa in RHD format.
It uses a beetle type gearbox with IRS sideplates, driveshafts with universal joints, not CV joints, with a splined sliding section in the middle of the shaft and reduction box hubs at the wheels similar to the 64 to 67 split buses.A very odd setup that only the brazilians could come up with.
Hope this helps.

Sorry Sled, I don't have any, I'll try and make some tomorrow, I am going to a local scrapyard that has a few of these buses, I'll have a look.
Otherwise maybe Fig has some?

Cheers, Eric

It is not an IRS set up, just the IRS center section with normal swing axle side plates and tubes.

'68 bug is 4:12 swing axle
'69-'72 bug is 4:12 irs
the only different between those that i know of is the r&p gear
and the diff one is irs only the other is swing axle only
you can redrill the gear to use either one but it is not recommand
if done wrong it can weaken the gear

I would really like to see photos of this setup. I have had an idea to do a similar thing but with IRS CV's mounted to a RGB at the end, with the goal of a rear suspension lift in a spit bus. The CV's could handle a more extreme angle when re-indexing the springplates, and the RGB's keep the height. All this without lowering the engine/tranny to keep the ground clearance.

If it sounds crazy, then it's just right.

Corey, I told you about that guy doing this over by CDA, he had it figured out, and could be done by now?
