Possibly. That's definitely one of the buses mentioned earlier. _________________ "Saying what we think gives us a wider conversational range than saying what we know."

I would really like to see photos of this setup. I have had an idea to do a similar thing but with IRS CV's mounted to a RGB at the end, with the goal of a rear suspension lift in a spit bus. The CV's could handle a more extreme angle when re-indexing the springplates, and the RGB's keep the height. All this without lowering the engine/tranny to keep the ground clearance.
If it sounds crazy, then it's just right. |
Corey, I told you about that guy doing this over by CDA, he had it figured out, and could be done by now? |
Is this the guy making the electric/hybrid bus thingy? I would be interested to see what he has accomplished so far. _________________ nothing |

Good to see so many responses to this. I have wanted to run reduction boxes for years but with cvs, have seen some conversions and was about to start my own when i discovered the factory, brazil, had sort of already done it anyway. Have someone in South Africa looking into it for me, i believe they were in the brazilian split/bay hybrid...not in the fleetline like i thought only a couple of days ago. I think its brilliant and dont give a stuff if it looks odd, but would rather have cvs than halfshafts, would think makes fitting options for gearboxs a bit more open unless going for in the weeds look as well, i want to go up not down, now if i can just find a 4wd jeg box and front diff and spindles.... have included some links...fist one is fleetline and brasilia in South Africa history and second link is home made irs reduction hub setup..and third is photo of factotory setup im talking about..... http://issuu.com/acvwsa/docs/vw_fleetline_bus_history http://www.mudtrials.org/thetrialscar41.htm

So this setup would require trailing arms, yes? _________________ Founder and Chairman Emeritus, ECMSAS

Yes. The pics in the link show them. The Brazilian setup looks to have used trailing arms also.
From the text on that site:
Inside end of the radius arms. Four tubes welded into the end of a Toyota Corolla lower control arm (front). Bracket on torsion bar housing is RHS, and the mounting point is adjustable vertically. Lateral adjustment is by spacer washers. _________________ nothing |

Interesting inboard disc brake setup, too. I wonder how loud the log chain limiting straps are on an open buggy? _________________ nothing |

Tell me, do they IRS/redux-hub buses have the same tuck-under problems the swingaxle buses did? _________________ Cheers & God Bless

No. The "extreme" tuck is cause by the swing axle. The trailing arm basically "replaces" the swing axle as far as suspension geometry is concerned. It still does affect camber both positive and negative depending on initial set up and up/down travel, but no as severely as it does with the swing axle.
Here's a pix of my new IRS at its extreme, jacked up position. Looks to be about 1-2 degrees. I'll have to put my angle finder on a swing axle bus for comparision.
