I stopped into Rocky Mountain Westy today to pick up my new rear tube bumper, awesome bumper btw, and saw one of their under-the-front-seat storage boxes and figured some of you might need one of these.

They also have a lockable storage box that mounts behind the passenger seat pedestal. I was really impressed with the lock. It's going on my "Christmas present to me list". _________________ "Democracy is two wolves and a lamb voting on what to have for lunch. I could probably use something like that, seeing as my locks are stuck. Or I could just lube my locks |

While very cool, my wife has already said no. No worries, I'll just keep picking away and it'll be installed by December. At the rate I'm going on the Westy, I feel like Michael Jackson and plastic surgery! _________________ '85 Westy |

very cool, I guess you have to cut the metal and expose the famous hidden compartment to install one of these in a westy right? _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Hey MadSpaniard,
I know you're a lot like me... it's only a matter of time.
It's actually very simple, you simply remove the sheetmetal with a sawzall and you're good to go. Should be a simple mod when the time comes. _________________ '85 Westy |

OK, next time you drive down here or I drive up north we share a couple of beers together to muster the courage to cut the darn sheetmetal, my teeth are grinding just thinking about it _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Ok, what am I missing?
Can't someone just slide the seat forward to get what's in that box?
I don't have a Westy but it seems to me my Vanagon GL's all have room for the top to be above the seat compartment floor.
Thank you,

I don't have a non-camper vanagon but I believe those vans have an open space under the seat, Westys have a hidden compartment under the swivel seat. You need to cut the sheetmetal to access this space. _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD

Ah Ha then it's not a big idea for us lowly GL owners?
Neat idea for the campers though.
Thank you,

I like the idea, but I cut out that front panel, and found I had JUST enough room to slide in a 4-channel Alpine amp.
madspaniard, the sheet metal that you need to cut is very, very thin. It's pretty low drama, actually. 5 minutes of cutting, 5 minutes of smoothing off the rough edges with a Dremel, and good to go. _________________ 1985 Westy, 1.9L automatic (Daisy)

Looks pretty spendy for what it is and what it does and how much it holds. Seems like it would just invite a break in. I haven't needed one in ten years, I don't know why I would need one now. A simple cabinet lock on one of the cabinets is a lot more useful for $6 bucks. _________________ 89 Westy 2.1 Auto |

I would argue it's not a matter of needing it, rather it's convenient. I didn't NEED a second battery, it too is simply a matter of convenience. I would also be hard pressed to build something of similar quality and strength for any less than what they are selling for.
The best lock box is one that no one sees. I imagine most smash and grab thieves are not looking for a locking glove box under the seat, especially if one were to camouflage it better by gluing the removed section of carpet back over the face of the box - minus the lock of course. They would probably go straight for the glove box and cabinets as they are in plain sight. Even with a lock on one of the cabinet doors, that plywood would rip apart with little effort or time at all. _________________ '85 Westy |

this is WHAT WESTFALIA SHOUD HAVE DONE IN THE BEGINNING?FIRSTPLACE
it probably would have cost more then $140ea too.
I'm in the process of relocating the pass seat battery and installing a inwall home security safe in that location..
Mom's camper wants a place to securely store her purse while were out hiking.
