PostPosted: Wed Aug 28, 2013 3:01 pm    Post subject: Crank seal at fan hub Reply with quote

Great thread.
I used that harmonic balancer puller with great success afterTrying many of the other suggestions. I am now attempting to replace this same crank seal and 'o' ring without dropping the engine - can't seem to get the seal to seat all the way down. Any special tools or sealing compounds? I see the tool recommended in the Bentley, of course that's not happening. Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
Doug

Did your use a sealant on the exterior of the seal? If you used something like silicone the seal may keep trying to work its way back out. A little oil on the exterior of most seals is all you need, though I use Permatex on some.

A large socket can be used to drive in a seal or an old bearing race, but I usually just use a squared off chisel I have. I just work my way around the edge tapping the seal in a bit here and there.

Ok. Ill give that a try. How about the 'o' ring - where is it supposed to go exactly? Also, this engine doesn't even have 50,000 miles on it, has good ventilation, and is leaking like a champ from this seal. Should I be concerned that it is something more serious? Thanks for the speedy reply. Doug

The o-ring goes onto the taper on the end of the crankshaft before you install the hub. Never understood exactly how it seals with the keyway being there???

Are you sure the seal is where the leak is coming from? The oil pressure switches are notorious for leaking.

Almost certain, I tackled the pressure switch two weeks ago and it looks to be staying dry.

It slides onto the taper on the crank and the recess in the end of the hub will mate with it as the hub is installed. Funky but it works.

No!!! You slide the o-ring onto the taper on the crank, it does not go on the hub.

I just thought I would add to this thread that the gasket for the oil filler tube is the same as the 30pict-1 bug carb gasket. The VW parts stores will always have the 30pict-1 carb gasket.

so far so good. this AVP rebuild has been leaking since we put er in almost 3 years ago. can hardly believe it has stopped leaking now this crank seal was redone and quite possibly the "O"ring being placed in the right location :/

here is a link to ratwells page on seals where he refers to this "o"ring

http://www.ratwell.com/technical/GasketSet.html

cheers

Where did you end up putting the o-ring?

Not going to seal much there as it is outside of the shaft seal and there is therefore nothing to seal. The purpose of the o-ring is to prevent oil from working down the taper past the woodruff key and out past the bolt and washer, as I said it is kind of funky. The washer will typically do the sealing job anyway so it probably won't matter, but if it starts seeping around the washer you can just remove the bolt and washer and smear some silicon on the mating surfaces and reinstall. That should stop any seepage.

Pick up a Haynes and check out Figure 18.3b. Wink

Guess I could take a picture of it, upload it, and link to it. Not going to happen right now though.
