| I'm rebuilding the transaxle and am stuc opening these boxes. I've got the cases split about a half inch and they won't budge. All the case bolts and nuts are of ass is the backing plate, bearing housing, and seal. What am I missing? |

have you removed the lower outer bearing, the one you can see when you take the bearing cap off? _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

big nut, forgot that part, sorry.
No, it hasn't been removed, it didn't seem to want to come off...it also seems independent of the rear housing. When pulled as far as possible, the trans binds and the input shaft in the bell housing causes the whole axle housing to rotate when turned. |

the case is flanged behind that bearing, you need to get it off first. you can see where the bearing sits in the outer case here in hazetguys' pic:

Man, I want a set of Hazetguy's mechanics' mallets. They are the mallets one sees in the Bentley.
Or some more new Cook's brass mallets- I have only the one-pounder.
SniperX, are you seeing the spots on the front of the RGB case to tap on? You can use the filler plugs to tap on, provided they are screwed in pretty far and you use a block of wood or similar.

No- the front of the RGB case will separate. See the seam?
The back half of the RGB case must be pressed off the axle tube. |

nope. remove that bearing. you will also have to remove the plug from the back of the RGB to remove the rest of the lower stub axle. _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

"high five" Dan! you beat me to it!
edit: just looked at a few of the pics, it looks like that lower bearing could stay in, at least the inside part of it? _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

Remember those halcyon days, Josh, before we even knew what 'RGB' meant?

To remove the case cover, yes- the roller bearing can remain on the stub axle. The outer race just taps out but you knew that.
By the way, I couldn't find a bearing separator locally to press off/on the new roller bearing - I had to make a separator from a piece of 1/4" plate. Worked fine!
Yes, I've always known it as 'Red/Blue/Green'.
I also used to think 'TBA' always stood for 'Tires, batteries and accessories'. |

Already saw those pics, unfortunately they aren't very useful without descriptions of whats really going on.
Any hints on wrestling that bearing out? |

I believe those pics accompany the Bentley manual instructions. Do you have a bentley manual?
With a Bentley, some basic tools, (the proper tools if available to be borrowed) or a welder, some ingenuity and the friendly samba folk you can do it. _________________ Josh The Bus Guy formerly known as JOGR

| I have every one BUT the Bentley, including some strange old ones. I'll show the pics to my helper (dadio) and see if he wants to continue. I'm leary of this whole rebuild the trans thing. Even the Haynes manual says "If you've never rebuilt a transmission, don't start on a Volkswagen." |

step away from the bus.
go buy a Bentley (link for ordering one in this thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=391724)
read it.
You CAN remove the RGBs and strip the tranny down to a center section.
You can remove & replace the axle shafts/ fulcrum plates/ crown gears on a tunnel case tranny.
Leave the center section to the pros. _________________ The Obsolete Air-Cooled Documentation Project http://oacdp.org/ |
