|
|
I have just replaced the CV Boots on my Camper. Took the axle out and cleaned then regreased the CV Joints put new boots on and reinstalled. I took the camper around the block today and when turning it makes a clicking noise. Did I not put enough grease in the joints or do they just need time to resettle? Before chaning the boots the joints themselves where fine no clicks or anything just needed new boots. Any help would be nice
*edit* It does not make the noise at low speeds only 25-up.

When you re-assembled the joints did they all flex at the end of each of the shafts? They should. |

This part is confusing....are you positive the "clicking" is coming from the CV joints?
I once forgot to tighten the axle bolts...... No clicking, just grease everywhere, and a couple hours of dumb labor.

Both ends flexed when I was putting the axle back in the car I know this because I had incorrectly rebuilt one CV and when I went to put it in the car I could not get it to flex and fit to my transmission. The axle nuts have not been touched since well I've never had them off. The camper had made a trip to Chattanooga, TN with no noises. The only differance is I've cleaned the CV Joints then the noise started. Would they make a noise if they do not have enough grease? Just trying to figure it out without pulling them apart again.

Well then how teh hell did you replace the boots and pack your joints? There are six axle bolts on each end of the axle, no?
Get a small child an tie him/her under the bus.......drive >25mph, turning radically all the while, and tell teh kid to listen for the "Click".
If/when the kid finds the noise, untie him.
Yet another reason I just buy rebuilt axles from Checker's. $79.99 LIFETIME GUARANTEE (and no clicking noises)

heh, those axle bolts I thought you were refering to the main axle nuts on the outside of the wheel. Those axle bolts are torqued to 33 lbs or as close to it as my torque wrench let me. _________________ 1976 Type II Westy P22

Yes. If you can find a very small type tube adapter for a grease gun you can add grease that way. As I remember one in a bug shop in SC it was about a 1/4" steel line about 8" long. Shoved it in the boot from the inside of the axle and pumped the heck out of it while moving it around. Seems like a CV joint can't have too much grease. Fill the boot. |

When you cleaned the CVs, how did they look afterwards? Sometimes freshly cleaned CV joints will be loose and sloppy. All the old dirt and grease that was in there closed the tolorances a bit. My bet is that they are probably worn and need replaced. _________________ 72 Super Beetle

since the boots are fresh you may be able to slide them to make room without cracking them. _________________ once you realize im not impressed we will get along just fine |

Did you do each joint individually or mix all the parts together? Were the centers and outers reinstalled with the same ends facing in or out? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Great point. I haven't re-packed a cv-joint for so long I forgot about this issue. They need to go on the same way they came off.
Yet another reason I just buy the rebuilt axle and bolt in on. (very little to forget) |

How many buses today are running OG CV joints? I'd venture a 'guess' at less than 50%.
My last rebuilt came with Lobro joints...are they OG? who cares? The bus rolls fine with no clicks.
Even a 37 yo joint is gonna die sooner than later. |

I disassembled them one at a time then rebuilt so the parts did not get mixed.

But did they all go back on in the exact same location?
Did you find a kid to strap under the bus to identify exactly where the "click" is coming from? That could save a lot of time.
Are you sure it's a "Click" and not a "Clack"? |
