i put one for tom tom under the dash, it's now hard wired into the aux battery, there'll be another loose in the main battery box, also wired into the aux battery, for the cool box
i will leave another under the back seat for just in case, and the one that's in the dash already will be wired into the aux battery, before i put the dash back _________________ lucy our westy

For those of us who failed electric 101. If I wanted 3 outlets in the engine area, how would I wire it. I have an idea Correct me if I'am wrong. A wire I think someone said 10 guage, from the axillary to a junchen box and there to the outlets, with a fuse. From the jbox to the outlets, what guage wire and where would I place the fuse? (Scuse the speeeling) thanks all |

I'm looking for some panel mount USB sockets if anybody knows a source. Checked all the regular places.
Of course, it would be good if it had a built in transformer to go from 12v to 5v but I could deal with that if need be. |

depends on the load of all 3 at any one time, whether you want 2 to survive if one fuse blows & etc.
there are some web sites with basic electricity stuff on them also... _________________ 1986 2.1L Westy 2wd Auto Trans. |

All of this is brilliant, but has anyone mounted a 12V outlet on the outside of their van? _________________ '90 White Westy ("The Longship")

I put a Stainless steel one from a marine supply in the rear valence
it's easy to hook it up to the +12v on the back of the alternator.. just add an inline fuse.
I plan to add one to the pass side by the side light, so I can use it better while camping.
in this picture, you can just make out the small black spot next to the grimey license plate.

Yes. Not me, but someone here. (I do not have a link.)
A crafty way (for Westy owners) is to add a 12 volt plug to one of the (often unused) utility cover on the driver side.
Ditch your city water connection and add some 12 volt juice instead.

I was thinking of putting one on the passenger side somewhere - to plug in some lights, power a boombox, etc. Well done, though! Any problems with that installation? _________________ '90 White Westy ("The Longship")

Multivan/Carat ashtray and cupholder, just aft of the driver's seat..The 12v plugs are hot always from the aux battery. The 120v plug is behind the license plate. The 12v plugs are from Radio Shack,120v from Home Depot. _________________ 1973 Westy (shared birthday)

Capable of charging an Ipad at full rate.
These have a parasitic draw
I kept breaking my USB adapter as it stuck out too far from the ciggy plug.
This is another good option if you don't want a dedicated USB charging.

Samba friends,
Great posts here, thanks for keeping this thread rolling along!
I will order some of these Blue Sea units soon.
A generalsuggestion on 12 volt hardware:
Go with name brands like Blue Sea. A lot of the knock offs may cost a few $ less, but may well fail you in the long run. Redoing any work is a PITA, and electrical is no exception. (Ask me how I know this . . .)
Pay a few $ more, get Blue Sea; you'll be happy for the long term.

Thank you for the link! Just ordered one! |
You're welcome.
I primarily use this USB port for my MP3 player. My old USB charger produced a humm/ groundloop into the Music while charging. This Bluesea model is free of that annoying humm.
Now I do not need to use, and wear out, the Mp3's Li-ion battery to listen to music in my Van. |

Has anybody installed a 12v outlet in the area behind the front passenger seat to power an Engel or similar fridge? Pics? _________________ 1991 Westy auto w/ Peloquin TBD
