|

IN the process of putting on a new canvas on my 71. Slow but sure. What an ordeal.
My question is what is the proper procedure to lower and fold the canvas so it doesn't tear? Especially around the hinged arms. My Old canvas was so torn up I didn't really care how I closed it ..but I definatey don't want to tear this one. Thanks _________________ 1971 Westy Poptop

I kind of roll mine as I am lowering, (fiberglass top resting on my head) so that it ends up between the supports and the outer edge of the top if that makes any sense. I may have to stop doing that though because I am getting older and it seems to really hurt my neck now. |

Me too, top on the head and push out in the corners as it comes down creating an even accordian fold. Getting close to the too old part too _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I get my wife to roll it as I slowly lower it with my super muscular arms... , oh wait that is the Zigzags....kidding!
By myself I do it the same way as described. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

I was thinking the same thing!
Makes me think I need to devise some kind of prop before I purchase my camper bus as I already have neck issues...

Digital copies of the owner's manuals are available on this site under the "Technical" tab (see the site menu above; it is on the right side).
Here is a link to the 1971 VW Dormobile Westfalia SO-69/3 Camper manual:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/manuals71dormobile.php
Page 11 in the above link discusses the poptop, but does not mention the canvas:

I just installed a new canvas, and we really like it...I just let it fold itself(like an accordion?) and just make sure it isn't sticking out the sides, on the outside. I've got a VW 72 westy campmobile owners manual(about 30 pages), and the link above has a sentence or two more about the poptop, but no folding instructions. I've been leaving it up most of the time, cause it looks nice... |

On my '73 Westfalia I lower the top then with a shoulder lift the top slightly and gather the canvas then lightly "roll" it up and stuff it. _________________ 1979 Type-2 Westfalia “Sandy”

So you guys keep the canvas totally on the outside of the hinge/arms?
At first closure it must stick out of the sides a bit....so you walk around and stuff it back in from outside the bus to the inside? _________________ 1971 Westy Poptop |

I keep it behind the hinges, but I let it hang past them as I'm bringing the top down so to avoid all that outside nonsense. Then stuff it in place when the top is down. _________________ '71 Westfalia |

mines a 78 but I always grab a lil bit from the either side areas and pull them in toward each other[ up away from the rubber seal], then loosely roll the center piece away from the latch, while it rests on my head Always remove my caps that have a center bead too. Those suckers sting when the roof taps that into the top of your skull |
