I am running a straight 3/4 in steering shaft and I needed some ideas on how to collar it so that I can attach a universal turn signal switch.Thought about welding something off the cross support for the steering column that bolts to the body.Any pictures would be extremely helpful.I will be having a custom made dash built around whatever I can come up with....just want it to look neat and clean. Thanks in advance guys! |

If you like the exposed shaft and only want a partial column where the directionals would attach, you might look into using the part of a bicycle frame that the fork shaft runs through. It's usually a nice strong piece of tubing, large enough ID to accept your 0.75 steering shaft, is of aluminum or steel and just may have the correct bearing races already installed to work with what you already have..
The OD of that section of the bicycle frame is perfect for strapping an aftermarket blinker set-up to as well.
Maybe?
Worth a look, free at any dump or on any typical trash day, would be sort of cool to use a bicycle part from an old toy in your new toy. |

Toggle switch on "dash" or "center console"...

Here is what I did. I fiberglassed a pvc coupler in the dashboard and in the firewall. When I mounted the hood I put a section of pvc pipe in between the two couplers. My shaft is fully hidden inside the car. I then put a bearing inside the top of the coupler and put another section of pvc pipe with a short section of original steering column inside it on the very top. The beetle turn signal mounts on the original column section and I attached the steering wheel to the shaft. Simple and clean.

No pics but this might help.Used a pc. of steel 1/8"x 1/2"x6-7" and bent it in a U shape, rounded the corners, drilled 4 holes, smoothed the edges and painted it.Then mounted one leg to the dash(Manx fiberglass dash) and the other leg to the 2 screws that hold the signal together. You will have to use longer screws and double nuts and washers but by playing with the angles you can get it to line up exactly with the curve on the signal and the curve on the shaft. This bracket is hidden so looks like a standard install.Used it for 3 years and is still working with no flex etc. |

Cory, that's SLICK, and I LOVE the way it looks and works AND the look of your paint and dash as well. Great Job ! !
I would like to try something similar with a Fiat that I'm building on. How did you work out the horn, blinker housing, high beam switch grounds when using the PVC rather than stock metal steering column tubing?
Could you post a quick diagram of how your set-up wires into the main loom?
Appreciated ! ! !
Thanks,
