can we add a VOLKSROD section to the forum board? it would be easier than searching for them in all the different catagories? |

I think one reason there isn't more volksrod traffic on this site is because they don't feel welcome here. _________________ Mother Nature is a Mean Evil Bitch! |

I vote YES. sounds like a good place to talk about chopping tops, and sectioning, and grafting in oval clips. kinda like if you wanted to know about swapping in a bus box to handle more power, you'd go to the off-road section. _________________ 1974 Super Beetle: Custom resto in progress

Ummmmmmmmmmmm Let me get back to you on that one LOL
Seriously, it "should" be a good idea. There are plenty of people that have and build them on here that don't talk too much about the cars themselves because they would get a ration of crap from some folks. What about adding a volksrod heading to the kit car or "other VW" catagories.
I know that "rat rods" are not usually appreciated here, but there are a lot of really fine builds that having an additional knowledge network would benefit...... Kick it around, but my initial comment will prove itself in a matter of minutes LOL _________________ D-Dubya Manx clone - 63 Short pan,1914.

You know I'm always good for some feedback.
This topic could go either way... good or bad..
I'd say some definitions, on what is (as considered by most), a Volksrod would be in order.
I personally say there is enough interest for a VW Volksrod specific forum, here on TheSamba. Volksrod topics that are already established can be moved accordingly, taking them away from and out of sight from the traditional VW forum sections. That way those who want to see and contribute can, and those who disapprove can stay away if they choose.
Ratrods.....can be any vehicle make, while a Volksrod is VW only....
Thats a different topic all together. Most Ratrod VW's dont have major body alterations, more patina' (rust), as what its called today..
Volksrods are geared more for the Hot Rod and Kustom car crowd that enjoy's VW's as well, more so than the pulled out of the ditch full of weeds, and rollin' Ratrod VW's.
Both are similar base styles, plus have an appeal and a place in the VW world...
Volksrods are really right up my alley, as I appreciate all styles and surely enjoy the Kustoms.
IMO
A rolling, running, and stopping VW is one that is saved, and still has life... therefore, Volksrods, and yes even SAFE ...Ratrod VW's, have a place on the greatest VW Website on our planet....TheSamba.com.. _________________ aka Ken {o\!/o}

The most obvious defining characteristic of a Volksrod would have to be the lack of fenders and maybe an extended front axle. That makes sense considering the style emulates pulling the fenders off of 20's and 30's American cars and calling them "rods". Some are built in the rat style while others are very nicely finished, I'm interested in either style. I don't think a VW ratrod specific section is necessary, unless you want to call it hoodride.
I'm all for a V-Rod section, if there is enough interest to warrant it. I'd encourage anyone interested (lurkers with projects?) to post in the "other VW's" section and see what happens. If it takes off without too much controversy, I'm sure the "powers that be" will take notice.
side note: Ever wonder where the term "hot rod" came from? Think about Grampa back in the day saying Jr was out " hot rodding" around town... _________________ Two wrongs don't make a right...

As usual, we have this need to put a label on everything and find that narrow slot to place it. Right after we set the standards for a Volksrod, someone will post up a creation that doesn't fit the criteria and we are off and running with another war like whether painting your stock VW any color other than the one it came as, is a restoration or not! Take a look at what has been labeled a "Hot Rod" over the years. I could argue that 99% of the cars on here are modified in some way and are now "Volksrods"/"Hot Rods". I vote for a stop to all the separations and on with appreciating the work we put into any Volkswagen. After all, it was VWs that got us here. Not patina, bud vases, BRMs, Fox shocks, air bags, or spindle mount wheels. |

If anyone has a list of knows of existing topics that are "Volksrod" projects/discussions/etc. please post links here.
Mostly wondering if there are a lot of topics already spread out plus if someone already has some list they keep, that will give me a head start if it makes sense to make a new section. _________________ How to Post Photos

My only concern with having a Volksrod specific forum, is the typical anti Volksrod banter that will come from it on TheSamba.. Volksrods mostly get shuned, pointed, and concentrated, to another website, ( NEIN) and AWAY from TheSamba.com. I guess thats fine, (for us) as the Volksrods only websites, have good resources with members that may be crude at times, but have open, creative minds, and dont mind to show and tell it.
Kustom vehicle lovers love Kustoms, and most can appreciate the stock form as well, while most of the Stock Nazis as they have become known as, cant see past the original German glass, and wont appreciate the hard work performed to save another VW, even though it doesnt fit the VW mold.
I think there are differences in defined Volksrods and VW Ratrods, the issue is most NON VW Hot Rod guys, call anything without 10k dollar paint jobs a Ratrod, and thats how all the confusion for us begins. Some Volksrods, are darn right gorgeous, while others are more crude. Both require lots of time work. In my opinion, a Ratrod VW is the category where all the unrestored, yet mildly Kustom touched VW's in mostly stock shaped body form fit into to, while a Volksrod is more heavily modified, with more than suspension, to include major body, and yes even Non VW parts.
For the record we can live without a Volkrod specific forum here on TheSamba, but they ARE VW's at heart.... Just like Kit Cars, and Dune Buggies, of a different era. I'm sure they were shuned in thier infancy as well.
Here are some of the Volksrod topics I have found. You will see they are in forums all over the place, some with good advice, some with negativity, and some simply point questions and references AWAY from TheSamba.com.
I tried to only include topics with Volksrod revelancy, and pictures that are still working. I also referenced a few Rat Rod topics. Granted this isnt all of them...
and folks.... We aren't going away either... If you simply cant stand them, just look away... if you can.
