So I was driving thru Arlee, MT (population<1000) this morning and there's a huge wrecking yard...In turns Bessie! as I needed a new valve cover. (i'm thinking one of mines is bent) I find a complete '74 Westy!
Got a Valve Cover, the fresh air blower duct (lost mine somehow), two shroud to HX covers, the elusive alternator adjuster nut cover (mine is sheet metal and RTV), and a 1969 CLYMER book all for $15!
Hell, busted bus wanted $34 just for the fresh air blower duct! The book is 40 years old and in good condition...bought it just for historic reasons. He charged me $5 just for the book (that's the list price from '69, as you can see in the pic)
You never know what's lurking in a small town wreckers...

ahhhh....the memories!
and the family...
this book has a lot of splitties...
Do the splitties not have a removable apron?

The engine is semi torn down inside the bus, everything was there...nuts and bolts in foil cupcake trays all organized!

It's there...but I didn't test it.
I can't believe this bus is gonna die in Arlee, MT...the owner said the kid that had it couldn't afford to fix the engine...
the book is NOT copywrited, so I figured it was OK to post pics |

They do, apparently removing the rear bumper was more work for these techs than jacking the bus up. _________________ Half Bus, Half Truck, What the _______? |

OOPS! she's not a westy...she's a Rivvy?! and she popped up like butter
decent canvas (bad zippers) and so clean...the top bunk bed pad is downstairs
headliner like NEW!
'74 HX and muffler.
complete dash and uncracked window
the engine should not be mounted in here!
at least she's got some german neighbors...that '70 in the background was a weekender...sink and ice box decent
anyone in the northwest want a project? If I was living here, I'd save her!
I think I just caught camper envy...I'm 6'4" and I could stand up without hitting my head inside...
I've seen much worse buses rollin' down the highway...

Somebody better save that! The body looks solid and the bus looks relatively complete. _________________ "If it isn't leaking you should check your oil"

I would give the HX's a B (minor rust holes)...the muffler was decent, but no tail pipe...perhaps rusted off bolts? (didn't look that close)
You're only two hours from Missoula...? BUY THE BUS! the dude is real reasonable on prices to me...I went back today to get the front side reflectors...total cost? $3 (and snap a few pics)
I told him I was going to post some pics on the internets...he was cool with that.
Call him and ask... "Kelly's Auto Salvage" Keep in mind he doesn't speak "bus". |

thanks for the name of the yard. im interested to see what else this guys got.
thats the only 2 bays?
I bought the whole engine and random bits (72 sunroof) and didn't realize the pass side hx was smashed, not rusty, but bent all up.
I never have been a fan of riveras. plus ive got plenty of work to do on my 78 westy. |

Only 17 miles! (but the road construction slows you down)
Dude, check your PM's...I would guess they are NOT. they are way too clean. I'm speaking only of the lenses, I'm guessing the assemblies are OG.
I almost bought those too!
I'm in Missoula for another day or two...I'd like to hook up for a beer! to mourn the death of "The Road Warrior"!
peace
p.s. the more I think about it, I'm ready to cut Bessie's top open and have some head room...the Rivvy bed (upstairs) is nice and long...with no headbanger. |

In case you guys aren't aware there is a guy south of Butte about 17 miles just off the turnoff to Divide. He calls himself Brax Euro parts and when I was there a year ago at this time he had about 5 sheep barns full of VW parts, unbelievable what this guy has. _________________ 1978 Riviera FI Auto Trans

I just got a '72 sierra yellow westy from Whitehall shipped up to me and there is a laundry list receipt from Brax auto from '02 including rebuilt trans, joint work, engine work etc. etc. Now I know who to call for additional parts. Thanks. |
