Just put in a rem rack and a few days later ( not that many miles ), total loss of power steering. No leak anywhere and no strange noise. Can something broke inside the pump that will cause the total loss of power steering ? I am not looking forward to remove the rack and send it back and hope it is something else.

If this seal fails

then you will get no power assist. No way for you to fix it. Gotta take it back if this is the problem.

I think you are right. I swapped power steering pumps between the two vans I own and the result is the same. There are only three seals that are under the pressure of fluid - the two end seals and the seal for the piston. There are no fluid leak so the piston seal must be at fault. Has to take the rack off tomorrow and I am not looking forward to it as the tracking has to be adjusted again after I put the old rack back in.

Some more thought on this. One of the C clips must have gotten out of its groove under pressure as the rubber O-ring is for making sure the spacers are pushing against the two C clips. The seal does not act like a piston ring.

No not all the parts are seen here. Take one apart and you will see.

I rebuilt one two year ago for my hard top and it is still holding up. I bought a re-manufactured one this time because there is not a lot of saving rebuilding it yourself. I found the mostly time consuming in rebuilding the steering rack is to polish the rod so all the scratches are gone. I was polishing the rod with a drill stand using 1500 grid wet and dry and then polishing compound.
