Oh comon stu that engine bay is FULL of FI...how did you mIss it?
Busdaddy, shit its all my fault, i even thoght of you while in vancouver and indidnt manage to act and pm you at least. My loss!
After seattle we made it to see Amskeptic and th whole portland vw group - what a great bunch of people and a shame the visit was short. But i was abl to cOnvince colin to take my bus for a sPin....something i never thought id have the oPpprtunity to do. Thanks colin for your time and thanks for the vw lessons. (before the drive of course, we found colin under my bus bumping the starter to aleviate my increasingly Problematic hot start problem!)
We're near carson city CA now after a very long day from portland. Time for some sleep! More details and pictures accumulating! _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

i knew it was FI, and i even joked about unpluging FI wires to screw with you...but i just totally spaced because that hatch made me think late bay for some reason and i didnt think about just how custom it really was.
and no i would never actually screw up someones bus on purpose. i only joke _________________ Stuart Zickefoose

OK! so we did in fact make the trip successfully, i've just been remiss in sitting down to provide an update to anyone whos interested!
i still haven't added up the fuel bills, calc'd the final mileages, totaled the miles or anything.
stops included nelson BC, Vancouver BC, Seattle (met the local VW boys there), portland (met the local VW gang there, and Colin/Amskeptic!) then off to the coast...i think we stayed in carson city, hit the redwoods, the to eureka, then san Francisco, Santa Barbara (got totally smashed with the locals!) to LA for a couple days, then to joshua tree/amboy, where we drove through friggin SCREAMIN 115F heat (like nothing i've every seen before!) to boulder city nevada, Las Vegas for a night, Salt lake city where we met Amskeptic again for a half day of itinerant aircooled fun!, then idaho falls, then the major push of 700miles to Calgary alberta, then finally another day home.
18 days total, about 5000 miles, 2 oil changes, 3 valve checks (no adjustments needed!) a whole lot of west coast cruisin, a little LA gridlock, a little scary route 66 abandoned town remoteness, rain, heat, sun, wind, fog, trees, rainforest, desert, and everything in between!
nice land you americans bordered down there, amazing diverse landscapes and a population density i didnt expect, at the same time vast areas with nothingness. people were pretty damn friendly just about everywhere!
holy hamburger stands and burritos batman!
got heaps of pictures but many are on the fancy camera that of course is a whole deal to get pics from, so i'll get them up here soon enough.
bus was a treat, other than a hot start issue that may have been more connections than unhappy ignition switches but who knows. so some push starting bus ran wonderful through the mountains and tore up the flats at 80+mph with CHT's around 380 for the flats, 400 for hills, and i couldnt go fast enough to get it over 375 on any kind of down slope. sure it ran super hot in the 115 desert but i wasn't stopping way the hell out in the middle of nowhere - nuh-uh, i've seen too many movies.
here's the only easy-access pictures i have from my phone - one is from some hot-assed town in wine/weed country, and the dark one is where we found the little guy after we stumbled home from that club in Santa Barbara
got some real actual nice pictures too, i just hate to post without a pics to add some color. i'll get the Ms. to download/upload/offload/unload those good pics soon. _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

Looking good , glad you managed to fit the throttle kit ok , pretty simple job but makes a big difference .
Will soon have late bay kits available if anyones interested . think youve sorted all the kits and jobs out then another request comes in ..... Now getting requests for RHD vanagon kits , will it ever end ?
No spring with this kit but does have a return stop screw setup just like the original ... |

hey thanks Butty and thanks for stopping by to say hi. i love the linkage, and while its kind of install and forget, i always remember its there when im operating.
sure its s simple 20min job to fit. but it takes me 3 hours 'cause I poke around at EVERYTHING while i have the pedal pan off - and then of course you have to remove the pedal, paint it, dry, then install - its actually a two day job!
i like the stop screw on the one in your picture - wonder if i could fit that on to my setup as well? _________________ May of '72 Deluxe. 2.0L L-Jet CS & 091 trans conversion

Don't need it. From what I have learned, measure 10mm in back of the OG hole/divot on the hockey stick trans shifter rod and drill a similiar divot. All done. Actually, you can do it when trans is installed, like I did (this might actually work better) , make sure trans is in 1st, put shift rod in 1st gear position up in the cockpit, mark the spot somehow(marker), and check in other positions and neutral, and drill the divot after moving the shift rod out of the way. I had to do this when I put a 5 rib and kept the 1700. Drove it for years that way, but the gearing was not right for the 1700,. Went back to a 3 rib along with proper tires, runs very well now. |

Those look sweet! |
Thanks waves!
I think they'll look extra sweet next to my latest score: original lead crystal glass cibie H4 headlights I found locally(ish)
I got them from the original owner, who bought them from his workplace in the 70's. Kept them protected behind plastic covers. They're almost perfect! Made in France and he tells me the bulbs are from the 70's too. Maybe install tomorrow?!
