This is a very slick conversion! I've been thinking the same but trying to simplify a bit more. Yours reminds be of a bug alternator but backwards. How about that? See what I'm saying? Install the pully on the fan end of the bug alternator, only does anyone know if you can run a bug alt backwards and still work? I don't have any lying around to try or I would answer that myself. Any thoughts? Although I do like this conversion! |

a bug alternator can spin backwards but the problem is cooling. in a bug the tin has a duct on the back. the t3 generator has a port on the side for cooling. even t4 alternators have ducting for airflow into them. _________________ http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y163/chucky1974/ninja.gif

why can't you put a alternator fan on the "back end"? (the front in a bug).
it should draw air from the engine belt shroud and through the alternator and out its fan on the back. |

You should be able to put the cooling port in a type 1 alternator. |

Been experimenting with a slightly different donor alternator, it has a 93mm diameter stator compared to the 100mm I normally use. I can get these new as genuine NipponDenso.

I have to say this is a pretty sweet way to make it fit without modification. Great job! I'm still struggling to make the ND alternator fit with custom brackets... _________________ 69 Fastback Build

good work.
question? what are you doing to ground the alternator?
i see the case is painted so I see no obvious means of ground. |

Yes a grounding strap will probably be required, after welding up the field coil holes and machining the back the original plating gets damaged. So sandblasting and painting is needed. Any of the 3 screws that hold the cover on the back would be a good location as they double as earths for the rectifier.
I usually do these in just a primer which lets you paint it to suit how you think it should look in your engine bay. |

All that work for 40 amps?
Surely since you are welding and machining you could find an alternator of higher amperage to adapt. _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"

Why because I don't see the point in going through all that trouble for 5 amps more capacity than the stock generator?
What's the point of the conversion? _________________ "In any racing engine, the nearer you are to it disintegrating, the better it's performance will be"
