Rear Brakes question

I went to replace my rear brake shoes this afternoon; and found that I could not remove the arm for the Emergancy brake. The pin looks to me like it was pressed on. Has anybody else seen this?

Probably have to grind that small side off , remove the old pivot , reinstall a pivot that has the clip to hold it in. Donor?

support it somehow and hit the pin real hard with a flat punch and hammer and it will likely come out. then try reusing it, if you can't go to the store and pick up a new pin of sorts. if it is rusted in place along w/ being peened in place, yeah just grind around the edge for ahalf second and bop it out.

best part is if you can just hammer it out you can ruse it by peennig it back in place like it is now. cheap is the operative word w/ a vw./

The parts store should have a 'hardware kit' with all those parts in it. They are not expensive, and a good investment especially when the brake parts are as old and rusty as yours.

my replacement pin did not fit and allowed the ebrake to drag on the drum, ruining new cables in about a year

I have eliminated the pin and used a small bolt and a nylock nut.
Grind off the pin, clean up the arm and bolt onto the new shoe.
What's wrong with that? Cool

there was a time when brake shoes came like that. maybe going back 15 years or so. not all shoes had the arms but lots did.

now the shoes usually don't have the arm. you have to grind or drill out the rivet to salvage the arm. a good brake hardware kit will have new pins, washers and clips to fasten the arm to the shoe.

well got my brakes replaced. Had to replace the star adjusters (got all mangaled up during extraction) but other than that all went well. The new brake shoes had the e-brake arm on them so I didn't have to locate and rob them from anything which made my life abit easier. Smile
