My PO decided it would be a good idea to remove all of the engine tin.
¤How do I go about putting it back in place so I can keep my engine cooled down?
The mechanic wants to do an engine drop to put it all back in place. Right now would be the best time to do an engine drop, and get down and dirty, replace the clutch, rear main etc... but....
¤Is this necessary? If not how can I put the tin back in? Is there a tutorial somewhere that I don't know about? _________________ If MacGyver only had a Bentley service manual.... |

What type of engine?
Yes, Virginia, you need all that tin.
If it's all gone, then you have to pull the engine.

If all the tin is off this would be an excellent time to drop the motor and replace the seals. |

so other than, yes the tin needs to go in, and yeah an engine drop sounds like a good idea
is it still possible to put the tin back in without dropping the engine? _________________ If MacGyver only had a Bentley service manual.... |

Well, on type 1 upright engines, the engine should be removed if you're missing the front tin piece that meets up against the engine compartment where the engine and transmission join. That all important piece mates up with the fanshroud and associated other tinwork, like your cylinder tin covers and the lower plates underneath that are bolted to the heater boxes. You don't mention what type of engine this is, and if type 1, whether you have a single or dual port engine. The type 4 engine guys might offer some suggestions based on what year you have, but it would help if you showed the membership some pics of what the engine looks like right now. _________________ '66 Beetle

seems entirely possible to put on the tin with the engine in. The hard part will be the screws under body near transmission and then figuring out which tin goes on top of the other then unscrewing them to fit the flapper boxes then screwing them back on. Expect some scraped knuckles. But all of that tin is nothing with out engine seal. Hopefully you are not running it with out the tin that goes of plugs and fan shroud.
Tom Wilson's book has a plan. I think. It is fun without one if you like puzzles. _________________ 78' bus FI

if ALL the tin is gone then you need to drop engine
i dont think you could install the small piece
that goes under oil cooler without removing shroud
the heads need to be removed to install the 2 pieces that go under
push rod tubes, so not only drop the eng but tear it down also
the 2 large tins can be installed with engine in place
if you knew where each screw went this would be a bitch
so if your asking for a tutorial, then not possible with eng in
the rest of tin would not be a problem installing with engine in |

Bumping old topic up for another question. Other than the junk yards, ebay or the classifieds here, are there any vendors out there selling new (OG or high quality aftermarket) type 2/4 engine tin pieces? I too was thinking of fabbing the two piece directly under the push rod tubes. Although I would probably butcher the job, we have a decent fab shop at work with some experienced operators. Thought about using aluminum or even stainless. But would rather keep it stock and just clean/powder coat decent OEM replacements. _________________ David W - from Chesterfield, VA / Jefferson SD / Stephens City, VA in that order.
