...about some things for building a trike. I have a 1970 type 1 VW and am in the process of taking the body off. Should have that done in the next few days. What I need to know is the length of the frame...I am going to use 2x4 inch rectangular tubing...from the transaxle to the upward bend in the frame. I am planning on going with a stock rake (stock to Harley specs anyway) and have a Stock Harley Heritage front end to put on the trike (spare parts are neat to hold onto!). Also need info on what wheels will fit the hubs. I have the stock wheels and tires on it at the moment, but am looking for something a little 'flashier'.
Any info would be appreciated!

Well, I got the trike almost done. Seat of the pants for most of it, but it is gonna be a safe and hopefully reliable ride.
JFYI |

Just a bump update to say hi and to let any trike builders out their know if you have any build questions I will be checking this forum more often...believe it or not I just discovered this section I didn't even know existed...funny cuz I've been a user for a few months and never thought that Samba even had a section for VW trikes...BTW has a very elaborate website and a ton of info but personally think their site needs a modern touch...so before I go I will leave you all to enjoy my in progress Rat Trike that I started over 3 years ago and now sits in my back yard waiting for more money to fund the finishing touches.

here are tips on the wiring. keep it simple and use good connectors and wire. get a marine grade fuse box and switches.
here is a trike i rewired about three weeks ago. the man had it for four years and had never road it. the wiring was made up of black tape connections, bubble gum and bailing wire. after wiring it and getting it running, he jumped on and did a burnout in the yard and took off down the street with a big smile on his face.
this second trike which is a different style, i rewired last week. once again the wiring was made up of black tape connections and household lamp cords. when i got it, it would not go over 60 mph and the headlight and other lights would turn off when he hit a bump. after wiring, the lights stayed on and it ran 75 all the way home and wanted to go more.
i want to publicly thank Dale M and Murzi from the forum for the wiring diagrams and knowledge. i had been wiring my own off road cars when the first guy heard i like to mess with wires. the first man told the second and now there are 2 maybe 3 more trikes coming. |

A local here and builder of his own says the type-3 rear suspension ''unit' will be used, cleaner and easier to connect to bike front, just my opinion also, would like to have one but too many bike 'final' accidents around here for me. |
