On the question of the type of "C" clamp that was used I was able to find one that looks very similar to the one Dan used.

It is on the VW Dealer and Retail Tool and Equipment site:
Suspension : Ball Joint Press C-4212F Special Tools

Yeah,
Found the frame as well but couldn't find the adapter. I have family in the Pacific Northwest, maybe I will just schedule a trip and have Dan do my balljoints. I'll pay him extra to say HAH! when they come out. Brilliant videos Dan.

I'll even let you watch. Smile
I looked for a long time to see if I could find the adapter and I don't think they offer it for sale anymore.

I thought y'all might like to know that the adapters (jigs, whatever you call them) shown in the photos of the old VW shop manual on page 4 of this thread are still available at www.tools.vw.com

(Will they work with the ball joint press C-4212F? I would think so.)

here are the links to each tool number ...
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&itemId=3070007
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&ItemId=9210008
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&itemId=2800007
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&itemId=2800007
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&itemId=13480006
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&ItemId=3050006
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&ItemId=13550006
http://buy.equipmentsolutions.com/VWAudiEcom/SpecialToolsDetail.aspx?type=Tools&ItemId=11190008

I used the photos of the old shop manual on page 4 of this thread to send a list of tool numbers to www.tools.vw.com and they replied as follows ....

412 $72.13 in stock
416b $44.24 in stock
459/1 sold as 459 only 173.49 in stock
459/2 sold as 459 only
401 $172.82 out eta February 2011
402 $201.16 out eta February 2011
415a $56.34 in stock
471 $96.88 in stock

Now, because they are expensive, we need to figure out which ones we absolutely have to buy.

Another question I have is ...will this 'tool set' we come up with work for my 72 Type 1 Beetle (I don't even own a Bus)

I was so excited about LouisVWAudi's videos on YouTube I saw today, but then the sudden disappointing end (you CAN do it without removing the trailing arms and taking them to a machine shop, BUT you can't get the right tool!) I just couldn't accept it. Hope we can all figure something out here.

'72 bugs come in two flavors. If it's a super beetle 3 bolts and a couple whacks and it's apart.

It's a regular beetle, not a super. Front end is original.

Way to go on finding all this. I truly thought that all of those tools were discontinued.
Sorry, people, for the mis-information, I stand corrected.

Those bus tools are too big for your Beetle.
Beetles, I think, can be done with some more "generic" adapters and the big C-clamp.
Just make sure that the two notches on the ball joint are parallel with the direction of travel on the vehicle when re-intalling.

LouisVWAudi,
Would you be willing to disclose which adapters you used out of the above list? I doubt it would hurt your business any as your excellent work probably keeps them lined up at your door.
Thanks,
Tom

This is so weird, lol. I just got done reading this thread the other night, trying to find ideas for a tool to take the ball joints out, in the bus. I found a video of a guy doing it and he put a link to where he got the tool, but I couldn't find it on that site. The thread was a few years old so I think they discontinued the tool.

We have 2 sets of the ball joint removal tool thingies like you pictured above ( just way older) and neither has the tool needed for a bus ball joint. So hubby made one. It's not pretty but it did the job, well part of it so far. LOL We still need to take the driver side joints out.

The timing on this thread is uncanny. last night I discovered both boots on the driver side are torn. Old grease is oozing out. I started researching replacing ball joints and boots. I think my joints are still good so I just ordered boots from BusBoys for $1.80 each. Seventyfo offered to provide some adult supervision when I decide to change them.

I think GermanSupply still has a tool kit available for rent to press them in / out.

You could make beer and pizza money renting it out! (Just have people put down a deposit. Say, about $700.)

not quite Laughing

the whole deal costs less than you'd have to pay me to put it to use.

I have been dealing with this all day. Felt the need to revive this thread.

Once I got everything clean, I can see that the AutoZone rent a tool set does not have a piece that has the 2 teeth. Like the video of the white suited HA guy.

I found this one on what looks like a Good web site, but my bank rejected the purchase. Anyone know what looks like "Original Ride" on the paper? Anyone have one, maybe purchased in USA?

I can make one of these, just need a thick plate and a plasma cutter.

You don't need the tool unless you want one for the tool box. I changed mine in this thread.

I noticed that my Ball Joint Boots are showing signs of Failure. Reading this thread, it seems to indicate that I can replace just the boots with a minimum of heroics.

while I am pretty handy, the procedures I find seem to be based on full ball joint removal and replacement.

Can someone outline the procedure to R&R just the boots?

I look at this a Ball Joint life extension project to put off the inevitable day where they get fully replaced so I do not want to enter that debate (just boots vs full replacement).

Thanks to all!

honestly, I would rather press the joints than fool with the boots. I had a boot pop that asshole spring that holds it on. very tricky to get them on and NOT punch a hole in the boot.

I know...people do the boots. I swear I can pull the torsion arms faster and press in new ones before I could get all of those spring clips back on

The big thing on whether to replace just the boots or trade out the arms for rebuilt ones is whether the replacement boots will last. You are in it for a fair amount of work just to get at the boots, so if the boots don't last you have wasted your time.

As far as the rings that hold the boots in place, I have found that one can just make a couple of wraps with some thin SS wire and twist it off carefully, making sure that the ends of the wire can not abrade or puncture the boots.

I put a lot of miles on some boots bought from Bus Boys years ago, but have no recommendations today for a source, though I have picked up sets from a couple of different vendors to test.
