The tool in the video looks more "robust" than the Autozone tool? And I would think you would need the impact wrench? _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

i hired one the other day and it looks just as robust as the one in the vid.
Might need an impact wrench but i reckon with a patience and a long bar could also be done.
then again an impact wrench is on my "to buy" list |

yes the tool looks a lot more robust than the typical cheap c-clamp tool (looks nearly twice as thick across to me), and yes you need an impact gun for sure, you also need the tooling which the mechanic has in the video.
but i'm sold. _________________ SL |

I am wondering how important the "Free All" is to the equation? _________________ 1972 Westy ("Bubbles") - Pastel White - 1700(1974 MT) - Dual Solex |

Louis, Thank you for showing us this. Every bus owner is going to eventually need ball joints replaced and you've given us a light of hope that we can control cost by doing it ourselves. Of couse that providing the "tooling" is rentable or fairly priced. Eitherway thanks for proving us wrong and now - move over to the East Coast as we need more mechanics with your abilities. Northern VA (not that I'm biased in anyway) is a fine area (hint) _________________ David W - from Chesterfield, VA / Jefferson SD / Stephens City, VA in that order.

What.......no HAA! this time? Well done. On both vids, looks like a third hand would of come in useful, but impressive, not a single utterance of profanity trying to get the clamp seated while holding the press ring and top all together. You got skills!
Now that you are somewhat of an instant Samba celebrity, will there be reinstallation vids with beam & ball joints still installed on bus?
Great job and thanks for sharing it with us! _________________ David W - from Chesterfield, VA / Jefferson SD / Stephens City, VA in that order.

I would love to see the video for the install. I bet he makes it easier than the removal. |

I would also be fascinated to see the installation, as well as to know where he sources those tools.
It is amazing to me how many more things I can do for my VW with air tools.

Thank guys.
The hardest part about the install is getting everything lined up straight.
Once that is done, it's easier than removing.
You'll see that when the rest of the video gets uploaded.
I'll upload the rest of the video tonight, but right now I have to leave for work immediately. |

FYI: The mechanics name is Dan Richardson. He bought the business from Louis (Louis Foreign Car Repair) and kept the name. _________________ 1979 Type 2 w/ Weber 40 IDF carbs

AUTOZONE like i said in my post at the top of the page
if you dont think the tool in my link looks "robust" enough go take a look at one and you will see that it is more than man enough to do the job. |

since this whole thread is about cost, it only makes sense to ask - how much did it cost him / what did you do? _________________ SL |
